hey guys i was wondering if anybody might be able to help me out here. recently i started hearing this clunk sound when i lift up the rear on my car. it makes that sound just about everytime i lift it up. i have no idea what it could be. i know there isnt a whole lot of info to go by but if anybody has any idea of what it could be please let me know.

 

what brackets are u using

 

Is one the brackets loose?

 

I think the brackets were either made by the shop who did the install or are universal ones. I'm thinking that if I get a chance today I'm going to drive by there and have them check it out for me. could it be time for new shocks? I've got 60k+ miles on the car and still have the original rear shocks.

 

That may be your problem, when Im aired out, and I hold the rear to lock it up, with 180 PSI the shocks cant react fast enough giving a poping or Clunk sound.

 

if I need to get new shocks, which ones should I get?

 

get the monroe 5987, you could have broke one and that's the clunk you hear??, good luck

 

well i took it over to the shop that did the install. they looked the rear all over and everything looked good. the brakcets were secure so it wasnt cuz of loose brackets. the guy told me it might be the shocks so i'm going to replace them and see if that fixes it.

 

with the monroes you will go down lower in the back since its a shorter shock, plus you will gain a MUCH improved ride. and you will ask your self why you didnt do it sooner

 

so would i go with the 5987 like jmseals recommended or the 5980 that i've seen other people talk about?

 

I have the GTI shocks I think the 5980's they are 6" shorter then stock, if you drive low you want the shortest shock you can, because you will be in the shocks "confort pocket"

 

does anybody know if the front monroe shocks are shorter ?

 

The part number for the shorter Monroe rear shock is 5870.

 

is anybody running kyb shocks in the rear?

 

what rear bags do you have
sleeves or convaluted?

the easy street sleeves will make a clunking sound
the convaluted wont

 

they are convulated bags

 

monroe 5870 is the way to go , just installed min and i got a 3/4 in drop on the bags and much better ride and less noise

i got the 5870s today so hopefully i can get them installed in the next day or two and hopefully thay will fix the clunking sound that i am getting from the rear.

 

i put the new monrow shocks and it didnt help. the clunking sound is still there. i took it back to the shop and of course it wont make the sound for them. they checked over everything and tightened up some things and i still get the sound. this has me stumped.
