Around the floor of the New York International Auto Show, which runs through tomorrow, doors swing open to reveal push-button starters — no key necessary.

They can be found on about 55 cars and trucks, including luxury models from Audi, BMW and Mercedes, and on Nissan’s inexpensive Versa as part of a $700 “convenience package.” Push-button starters have also become standard on hybrid-electric vehicles, like the Toyota Prius.

James D. Farley, the chief of North American marketing at Toyota, said that he has been fretting about whether to build all future models with push-button starters.

“What keeps me awake?” he asked recently. “Car keys.”

what is the point of push button starters? are we getting so lazy that we can't stand the hassle and effort to turning a freaking key?

also, if you have a push button starter, how do you just turn the car on, so the engine isn't running, but you can still operate the radio and headlights since the push button start only has off and ignition?

You simply press power without putting your foot on the brake, one time is accesorie mode and onother is "on" not engine on just "on" just like on your ignition switch now. if you want the car to start just put your foot on the brake and press power.

Manufactures are putting in push button start to go wiht the intelligent key. Ones that will unlock the door for you whenyou walk upto the car( with key still in your pocket). this comes in handy when you are carrying alot of stuff or when its raining or noth at the same time. You wont have to reach in your poket to get the key out. It wont make sense if you have this feature and still have to start the car with a key. You wil have to reach in your pocket to get the key out after you get in the car and its not easy to reach in your pants pocket when youare sitting down so tthey are using push button to start eh car.

START THE CAR = Foot on brake / push button
TURN ACCESORIES ON = Foot off brake, push buttom once is like turning the key one position, push it twice turns on all accesories, push it again to turn off car.

That is correct, and exactly how it works in my Altima.

With Smart Keys, you can't lock yourself out..the car knows the key is inside, also harder to steal

you can turn on the stereo... you press the button without your foot on the brake

To start the car your foot has to be on the brake

The only folks that don't like them are:
1)locksmiths
2)the key counter guy at Walmart and Home Depot
3)Horror film directors... how are they going to build up the suspense of the babe trying to start the car with Jason banging on the window if all she has to do is press the button and drive

If you think about it we cant lock our keys in the car with the tC anyway.

The tC wont lock if a door is open. So the only way to lock your keys in your car is to lock them by hand and why would you do that if you do it with the key?

I'm not sure if you can lock all the doors with the button on the door if a door is open so i guess the only real way to lock your self out if that doesnt lock the doors is to physically push the latches in by hand and then the trunk is still open.

Dont really know why im adding this lil tid bit but the person before me said something about locking your keys in your car so i figured id add to it

Two weeks after I got my tC I got to work, took the keys out and put them in the cupholder. I went to get something out of the hatch but the pass. door was locked so I opened the driver door and still not used to the controls I hit lock instead of unlock and shut the door. I was locked out. With the keys inside. It's possible.

The Tc's key are engine immobilizer keys...an anti theft device They are not smart keys and the Tc does not have a push button start.

If your keys are in the cupholder, and you hit the door llock switch and close the door you are going to be looking for a coathanger or calling AAA

The Tc does have an anti-lockout feature If the key is in the ignition, whether or not the car is off, and you get out of the car and try to hit the door lock switch, it will not lock

Push button start? I'm not so sure. The idea gives me horrific flashbacks to my dad's P.O.S. 1962 Nash Rambler. YIKES!
