Default xB randomly shaking...

Hey everyone,

I wanted to bring this to the attention of my fellow SL'ers before i go to the dealer. Every so often, usually when I hit around 60 mph, it seems like the front passenger side of my xB just starts shaking, and im not talking about a vibration, its SHAKING... So much to the point where my pedals are shaking as well... Now ive tried to come up with what it could be myself, and I havent found the problem yet. Ive checked the underside of the car for anything loose, ive checked the bolts on the shocks/springs, ive checked my air pressure in my tires, ive checked the rims and the lugs... And I cant figure out whats causing the shaking...

It only seems to happen when I accelerate, and like I said it usually doesnt start happening until I hit around 60... And then it starts, and it seems the faster i go, the more it shakes, then sometimes when I hit 70-80 it doesnt stop, but it slows down... What do you guys think It could be???

It could be your brake caliper seized. Happened to my friend in his subaru. Exact same thing, would happen when he accelerated because he would tap his brakes then speed up. Get your calipers checked!

sounds like you have aftermarket wheels, did you install hubcentric rings? If your wheel needs them and you don't have them it would cause a shimmy at high speeds.

I would start simple. Rotate the tires and see if the location of the shaking changes.

My PW did that, I took it to the dealer and they found the factory stock wheel to be bent. Guess i hit a pot hole or something and bent it. They tried to balance it and it shook the whole machine, So I just took one of my wheels and tire from my RS 1.0 and put it on, since they are pretty new. If you don't have and extra you will have to buy a wheel.

I think I found the problem guys...

I got my xB up on jackstands and inspected the front passenger side thourghly and found that my whole front bumper is loose... Why, because back in October I hit a tire on I-75 at about 75 and screwed up my front lip and broke the the fastner that screws it to the underside... And that along with a few other minor things is causing my whole front end to shake at a high speed... Thank god its this, i was worried!!!

I don't think the bumper would make the car shake that bad but i might be wrong. Fix the stuff you found and try it out. Hope that is all it is. Good luck. Let us know if your findings are the cause of the shake.

My friend and I were driving to Vegas a few weeks ago and some lady was driving like a sentra (or other non-descript import sedan) and the plastic cover on her rear bumper was not attached on the bottom. This thing would start flapping and get into a harmonic rythm and we fully expected it to tear off. I could totally see how a jacked up bumper at speed could cause vibration, but as these guys stated it could be any number of things.

Get it checked by a pro, since you hit something there could be all sorts of stuff bent/tweaked that could be causing the problem.

Well guys, i fixed the front lip/bumper and it STILL shakes, so that wasnt it, oh well, i tried... Off to the dealer!!! Ive also noticed something new now, whenever I stop completely and accelerate, right when i start moving theirs a... almost "popping" sound coming from under the car... SO im beginning to think its something suspension...

i noticed that the air filter enclosure shakes a good deal on my xA. I'm going to get it checked out by the dealer when I go in for an oil change.
