Default New 18" Wheels..and some questions

Just picked up a set of Enkei 18" BOBT rims with Toyo Proxis FX4 215/35/18 tires.

Have a question. The tires are pretty loud compared to the 195/16 Goodyears I was driving on before. The Toyos are rated for a max press. of 50psi.
I'm running them at 40 now. Is it safe to go lower..and if so will that help the "singing" of the tires some? I don't want to risk wrecking the rims though.

Love the look..the handling is nice and sharp...don't mind the slightly harsher ride...but the noise is a little much.

Any suggestions?

I noticed the noise with my 18s too...I just think it is the stiffer/shorter sidewalls. I have Nankangs and running the pressure at 38 psi. Haven't had any problems so far and it did quiet the road noise a little. I read that you never want to run max psi on your tires. I got a lot of good tire info at discounttire.com.

what is your wheel width??
I am running 215/35 stretched 1 inch on 8.5 inch wide wheels and only put it at 38psi. If you're running correct tire size/wheel combos, you don't have to run such high pressure.

So 7" is the answer. The car is pulling slightly to the left so I'm going to have it lined up today. Since the tires were used, barely, I'm going to see if they can check the balance as well.

oh yea you'll be fine with 7 inches wide because the 215 tire bead width is 7.5 inches. absolutely no need to run high pressure, unless you want the stiffness for some reason.

I had the car lined up yesterday as it was pulliing to to left slightly. Also changed out the lug nuts to locking/splined tuner-type.

Dropped the pressure to 35 and..all is good. The only "loud speed" is at about 25mph. That's when the tires really "sing"...otherwise they're fairly close to the 15s.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Kumho was brand I was considering. The Toyos were part of the deal when I bought the used wheel/tire combo. On next tire change I'll look at the Kumhos again.

Dang ! they have gone up to $95.00 per tire on tire rack.com ! I paid $74.00. I was ALWAYS a GoodYear tire man until these tires. I cannot say enough good things about them. Awesome tires !

VERY QUIET FOR 18's !
