LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. on Wednesday unveiled the 2009 Corolla, the 10th generation of the reliable subcompact sedan that became a best-seller after being introduced to the U.S. market four decades ago.
The car was introduced in Japan in 1966 and crossed the Pacific two years later. Since then, more than 30 million have been sold worldwide.
The new model, shown at the Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show, was designed to be sportier, with a larger interior, new chassis and a more economical and powerful 1.8-liter engine, the company said.
The decked-out XRS model comes with front and rear spoilers and a 2.4-liter engine capable of producing 158 horsepower.
The smaller engine gets city/highway mileage of 25/35 miles per gallon while the larger one gets 22/30 mpg, Toyota said.
The new Corolla is expected to reach dealerships in February, with pricing between the entry-level Yaris subcompact and the Camry midsized sedan.
Toyota also revealed the new look for its 2009 Matrix, the wagon version of the Corolla. It also features a lower, sportier profile, which the company said aimed for a "coupe-like style with a fun-to-drive image."
General Motors is expected to officially unveil a redesigned version of the Pontiac Vibe, a sister-car to the Matrix, at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The Vibe is built in a factory GM operates in cooperation with Toyota and which also builds several Toyota vehicles.

Toyota needs to grow some *****, grab them, and really put out something radical in the style department.
...
