Gear Ratios: Transmission

Ashe_WCM was kind enough to post the gear ratios for the xA/xB's transmissions.

  Final Drive        4.31:1                        4.15:1

4. High numerical final drive ratio = very short gearing
5. Short gearing improves acceleration

5th gear should be fourth. And somebody needs to make a new 5th that has a .67:1 ratio, or something near that. Then we wouldn't have to to rev it up to 4000 to go 80mph. Think of the gas mileage if 80mph could be done at 2800rpm or so!

Now don't go checking my math because it's surely wrong. I just ballparked it to make my point. If I knew it all, I'd make that darn gear myself.

That's really the only shortcoming of the xB. Other than that the car is just right.

I love you miko. . . if only you were a woman, I would find out where you live and watch you from a distance, with much love.

Actually if we had a 6th gear at .61 we would be around 25K RPM for 80MPH

6speed box for a box......._____in'! Someone do it!

TRD competition transmission gear set changes the ratios, theres two to choose from

Part number : 33030-EP702

Gear / Ratio C150 5MT
1st 2.786:1
2nd 2.059:1
3rd 1.600:1
4th 1.273:1
5th 1.042:1

Part number : 33030-EP752
Gear / Ratio C150 5MT
1st 3.200:1
2nd 2.359:1
3rd 1.850:1
4th 1.458:1
5th 1.167:1

i like those numbers, i get kinda annoyed sometimes with how short our damn gears are, especialy the 5th gear, its wiered driving 80 and doing 4000rpm, i was barley hitting 3000 in my other car at 80

jct 02-18-2005 09:49 PM

well the peak torque is at 4200 rpm so i guess 80mph at 4k should be fine only if they'll make the torque band at a lower rpm range i would be happy with a 6th gear then

Have you done it? Know anyone who has?

Is my math backwards, or would these gear it down ?? Ashe_WCM's post above says a .61:1 would be the way to go if we want lower revs at 80mph.

It's all good, except for 5th gear. It's so close to 4th. I haven't used 4th gear for six months. I just skip it and go from 3rd to 5th.

Anyway, I'm ready to spend some $$$ if anyone knows how/where to get it done.

I ALSO WANT TO CHANGE OUT MY GEARS IN MY XA WHAT WILL LOWER MY RPMS AT 80 MPH THIS 4000 RPM IS KILLING ME. WHO DO YOU UNDERSTAND GEAR RATIOS.

SnakeXB 01-25-2006 04:03 PM

has anyone done this yet or know if it worked?

p2filz 01-26-2006 07:54 PM

man ive been saying this for a while... hte whole 6th gear or 5th at .7

toxshox 11-12-2006 06:38 PM

I've been thinking about the possibility of dropping in a 5th gear from a Toyota Yaris since it is the same gearbox but gets better fuel mileage. I'm only focusing on the 5th gear as that is the only gear that bugs me. I want to maximize my MPG while still having power for in town and to pass in 4th. The thing I don't know is the final drive size between the models.

great info
here is a chart to play with

ive already put the stock info on the left side of the chart, but i didn't touch the right side

Time to raise the dead!

Ok I've been searching, but I am not liking my results.

My brother-in-law, and I went to Exposed today, and finally got to settle the score at the drag strip to see who's quicker. He has an '04 xB w/ a manual, I have an '06 manual. His mods are header + cat-back, where as I only have header + axle-back. The only other difference between our cars are wheels. He has 18x7 with 225s, I have steelies with 185s. 1st and 2nd gears we are nearly identical acceleration wise, but once we hit 3rd, he pulls on me. Best he, and I could muster was him a 17.2, to my 17.8. A short while later we hit the dyno that was set up in the garage. I went first, and put down a respectable(to me for what little mods I have) but modest 88whp and 99wtq. Expecting him to have a little more power due to his quicker 1/4 mi times, he went, and low and behold, his xB was only able to muster 87whp and 94wtq.

All driver mod jokes aside, my question is this. Did Scion change gear ratios between 04 and 06? As previously stated we are almost identical in speed till around 60mph(3rd gear change) and he just starts to pull me. I can not for the life of me understand how and why this would happen, scientifically speaking. Especially knowing I am lighter, and possess slightly more power. I know his wheels will change his gearing slightly, but wouldn't it slow his acceleration, not increase it?

What I want to know is if anyone has found a tranny that works for the xA so i can get 40mpg highway? That would be great...

I get 52mpg highway daily by keeping a safe following distance, steady speed and predicting what will happen by looking 1/4 mile down the road and adjusting my lane so I don't have to slow or speed up. Sounds boring, but I do my fair share of fast launches, passing and high speed cornering. Getting 42mpg in town because I pick my routes to limit stopping at lights, traffic and I time lights so I don't have to stop.

I'm trying to say that our cars are very capable but you have to learn its power-band and optimal fuel efficiency techniques. Best thing you can do for yourself is buy a Scangauge.

I agree. When I first bought my xB I found myself trying to shift into 5th and realizing I was already in 5th! A 4cyl. on a vehicle as light as a Scion should easily be able to get MPG figures in the mid-to-high 40s with better gearing.

Has anyone ever attempted a transmission swap for something with better ratios?

Understanding Gear ratio for Scion xB

[QUOTE=Daewootech;245150]TRD competition transmission gear set changes the ratios, theres two to choose from

Gear / Ratio C150 5MT

2nd 2.059:1

4th 1.273:1
5th 1.042:1

What is he rpm for each? Like 1st is 2700 rpm, 2nd 2000, 3rd 1600 rpm and so forth? I just bought a Scion XB 2010 and need to fully understand when o shift gears. Please HELP!!
