Ignition Light Install

I always felt like we got cheated with no ignition key light. Had looked at the one for the Ist in Japan but who wants to pay $100 for a simple light.

So I did some investigating and found a cheap solution.. . .

  1. Go here and buy this http://www.oznium.com/prewired-leds and this http://www.oznium.com/led-holder I used the 3mm size, 5mm might fit but will be close.
  2. Remove the small door at left of steering column:

3. Use T-taps on blue and pink wires (blue = positive / pink = negative) (I always disconnect negative battery terminal before any mods like this) :

4. Remove bottom section of plastic steering colum by undoing 3 screws. Drill 1/4" hole for the 3mm led holder and snap into place:

5. Run about a foot of positive/negative wire between T-taps and your led and connect with either solder or quick connects.

6. Enjoy being able to see the ignition in the dark! (day pic):

btw: this works same as dome light, so the led comes on when you open the door and dims / turns off at the same time. This tap source would also work for things like puddle lamps or any other lights you want to come on when you open the door and go off when you close it.
Total cost for this mod: about $3 and 15 minutes of your time, depending on skill level.

Key ignition light: Added info!

Thank you for the info, however I found out that with my Xb2 the wires were in a different location and color. If you have a XB2 you will need to place or tap connect your positive lead into the main blue "thick" wire located at the bottom center of the cluster just above the large pink and blue fuse relays. Your negative wire will need to be attached or placed inside the white and pink wire located above to the left the blue and pink relay. I tapped mine onto the bottom middle wire (there should be 3 pink/white wires total). Thanks again:biggrin:

Well I'm a bit late to post a reply here seeing this was about 2 years ago, but, had to anyway.

Way too simple for Toyota to include, I can understand. Hell, even if they included this simple set up you've shown us AND A FRICKIN' glove box light,....they could have up'ed the MSRP at least 20 bucks or so!

I know what I'll be doing for 15 minutes next saturday! Thanks Rhino74s
