86 Cup Brings Enthusiasts Together
The Racers’ Line has produced a small film about the 86 Cup, a California-based time attack challenge for the GT86 and all of it’s siblings. By covering a recent event at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, viewers are able to get an insight into what the 86 Cup is all about.
What is the 86 Cup?
The 86 Cup is a time attack series, divided into several classes that allows people to compete on track. The classes: Stock; Street; Modified and Unlimited, respectively, represent increasingly modified vehicles. The system classifies common modifications with “points,” and each class has a points cap. This makes it easy to know which class your car is in. From there, it’s time to strap on a helmet and hit the track.
The 86 is an excellent platform for track work, with it’s diminutive size, weight and rear-wheel drive chassis. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t take much in the way of modifications to set a fast lap time. Julio Gorge, a series regular, attests it’s a matter of uprated brake pads and fluid, then the car is ready.
There is the community aspect of the series, with most competitors working closely together to help each other go faster. There is also the commercial side of things, where manufacturers, like GT Radial will jump in to support the series and it’s entrants. Thomas Okihisa of GT Radial tires talks about sponsoring the series with the brand’s latest 200-treadwear street tire, the Champrio UHP1. It fit in perfectly with 86 Cup’s Stock and Street classes and was a no-brainer in the marketing department.
