Lighter, Less-Powerful FR-S to Bow in Tokyo?

Here’s the thing, Toyota, to keep the FR-S and BRZ alive, what enthusiasts really want is a bit more horsepower. The car is fantastic to drive, the cornering and handling are sublime, but the car gets to be a bit boring after you’ve lived with it for awhile. What we don’t want is another underpowered car, however, according to Motoring, that’s exactly what we are getting.

According to the magazine, Toyota is getting ready to introduce its latest co-project with BMW, rumored to be called the 69DZ. It will be a smaller, lighter, and less powerful version of the GT86 platform. The car will retain the front engine, rear wheel drive that makes the 86 twins great, but only make use of a naturally aspirated 1.5 liter engine that makes 129 horsepower. Essentially, Toyota and BMW are making a Miata fighter, even though the FR-S is already a Miata fighter.

We’re not exactly sure why Toyota believes that we need more underpowered cars, but the company is moving in that direction. Hopefully, the rumored Supra successor doesn’t have the same issue.

If the report is correct, the new 69DZ will bow at the Tokyo Auto Show in October, so stay tuned.
