Default Where can I buy a spare tow hook

I know the dealership has one but its like 40 bucks. Does anyone know a website that sells them for cheap. I need an extra tow hook for tying my kayak onto the roof. I haven't made the junk yard rounds but I wanted to see if anyone knew an easier place. Do they have the eyelets at lowes?

Many marine supply stores will have "shackles" that could help you out. Cleats? Rope eyelets? etc...

Head on down to Lowe's or Home Depot and see if there is a big enough bolt in metric sizing. You might have better luck, believe it or not, at a smaller hardware store, like Ace or True Value. Sounds like you don't really need the eye.

The bolt would probably work although the eye would provide a better place to tie the line. Thanks for the suggestion.

You're talking about the tow hook that screws into the frame, and comes with the spare tire, right?

I saw them on eBay a while back, but I haven't seen them since - and I've been looking. I put my car in about 12 inches of mud and was towed out by my neighbor's S-10...that little hook saved my bacon, and I want a spare!

Last I checked they were like $25...after shipping, $40 might not be a bad option.

I might just suck it up and get one from the dealer. I didn't want to pay but it seems like the easiest option. I want two because I am planning to use them as kayak tie downs. The XB doesn't really have any good tie downs so these hooks are going to work great.

Or if you can find a bolt have someone weld a eye on the end or a big washer.I cut my spare one up for this.

Heh. the windup key gave me a chuckle...

If you live in a larger metro area, take the tow eye to a wholesaler specializing in metric nuts and bolts. They can probably match it up to a big bolt with ease...

Or check the junque yards...

Why not just make another one for less than 5 bucks? You don't know anyone with a welder???

Exactly what are you proposing he weld to what else? How would you match the threading up?

Take the one he has to a hardware store and buy a bolt the same size then have someone weld a eye on the end of the bolt he just bought.

Yes, just weld up a couple large washers to the sides of the bolt head.

Your car did come with the hook. Its with the spare tire. In my case it was under the spare tire.

I got my new hook. My father is a teacher and he had a friend at the school machine shop make one for me.
