Default '08 xB Sunroof options?

Now i've read several posts where people are talking about putting in sunroofs in the '08 xB from the dealer. Is this true? How much?

Are there any pics out there?

I would love to see all the various sunroofs out there for the '08 xB.

thanks guys!

I'm not sure of how much, but there is only 2 options. one that opens externally and one that opens internally. the internal one, they replace the headliner with one that fits the sunroof overhead.

A fixed, hinged sunroof can be cut into the metal roof and headliner. It will only hinge upward, manually, and will be inexpensive but crude, able to be installed by a body shop. In my opinion this should not be done to a new car as such a product may decrease the value.

A better sunroof will be made by Webasto or Inalfa, and will both slide back internally, as well as hinge up, all electrically, with a sliding cover inside:

The Scion dealer will go do a Webasto or Inalfa dealer to have the sunroof installed, which will require the removal and discarding of the molded headliner, cutting a hole in the roof, removing the roof cross braces, installing the sunroof track and motor and controls and gutter drain tubes, and then installing a "floating" headliner of stretched fabric to cover the track and motor.

The sunroof dealer will charge the Scion dealer wholesale and the Scion dealer will charge retail, probably $1500, to make a profit. You may do better going directly to the sunroof dealer as I did for my '06 xB.

If you get it installed from the dealer... in the future if the sunroof leaks or if the seals are worn and it leaks, will they have replacement parts for it?

Which dealer? The Scion dealer has no connection or responsibility for the aftermarket sunroof. He can't buy it directly, or install it, or get parts directly, or repair it. The sunroof dealer/installer does all that.

I think the cheap drop-in, pop-up sunroofs installed by body shops have tight rubber clamping seals that are watertight, and that is about all there is to go wrong. I don't know how they are guaranteed or repaired.

In the good sliding sunroofs, the perimeter seal on the sliding glass panel is felt-covered rubber and is not totally water tight; it can weep. The condition of the seal probably depends not so much on how many times the sunroof is used, as how long the seal is exposed to UV sunlight. If the sunroof leaks water into the headliner, it is an installation problem, not a parts problem. That is because all the good sunroofs are designed to leak, catch their weepage in a perimeter gutter and take the water to the ground in tubes. Leakage onto the headliner usually means a tube is not draining and has caused the gutter to overflow; either a tube has a sag, or is plugged, or pulled loose.

The parts that are most likely to go bad are the electronic contols, the electric motor, and the mechanical track and linkage. The good sunroofs are guaranteed for 3 years by their manufacturer, and repairs are done by the sunroof dealers that install them.

Has anyone here actually had the Webasto sunroof installed in an '08 xB??

Vintage... I know yours is the previous gen design, but.. I'm guessing there is probably some increase in exterior noise inside the cabin. Would you say it's a dramatic increase, barely noticeable, or what? I'm thinking about getting this done after next year's tax refund.

My dealer installed my moonroof and it is totally awesome even better than the one in my 05 sport trac, It closes automatically and has lighted buttons that match the cluster color. The moonroof company name is inalfa asi series 925 ff. they have a web site. The funny part is that my xb2 is warr. for 3/36k and the moonroof is for 5 yrs unlimited miles against leaks and defects. It looks factory and not one person believes me that it is not. you can see it in my profile and when I get energetic enough I'll create links.

My dealer subs out the install, but because I purchased it through the dealer, it is warrantied through them. They installed the Webasto Hollandia 700 series inbuilt sunroof, which has 5 lit buttons, memory positions for openings, and tilt control when in the closed position.

The total cost was $1188, and the dealer provided me with a rental car for 2 days.

One of these days, I'll post pics.
