Default new user...question regarding charcoal canister

Hi guys and girls, I am new to scionlife...ive owned my xa for a couple months now. I tried to search for some info on this topic already but came up empty handed. I do apoloigize if i just missed them though.

ok, my check engine light has been on since a week after i got my 05 xa. been to autozone. got my code. charcoal canister problem. Ive done loads of reading online and what not..apparently this is a common problem with a lot of toyotas and its not a cheap one to fix (especially for a student)

with all of this said, I honestly have no idea to major of a problem this is. I know the canister serves as an emissions component....other than that I do not know its purpose. Is this a problem I need to fix asap? what effect is it having on my xa? I'm not going to be down and out in a short period of time am I?

any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Once again if this has already been addressed elsewhere I am incredibly sorry.

The box is located under the drivers rear seat. Looks like an x box game center laying flat. It is used to remove the fumes or vapors from your gas tank and fuel system. Why the light goes off and what it means, beats me.

I took my car in to the dealership and my car still was under warranty so they replaced it for free. If you still have warranty on the car, they should be able to take care of it.
