Default What voids a warranty? or what could void it?

I was wondering, I know that standard warranty is 3 years B2B, and 5 years for powertrain, but has anyone run into getting warranty issues resolved? As in, they said you weren't covered.

Hypothetical example #1: You've had the car for 4 years, and one day the transmission dies. You think, it's OK, b/c it's covered for the powertrain warranty. You take it to the dealer, and they say, actually, the computer failed that caused the transmission to die. The computer component isn't part of the powertrain warranty, hence, you are not covered for anything.

Hypothetical example #2: You've had your tC for 4 years, and redline it all the time. (who doesn't like being first from the stop lights?) One day, the engine falls out (not literally). You think, it's OK, b/c it's covered. You take it in to the dealer, and they run some sort of computer diagnostic, and they tell you that you drove it way too hard and over mfg suggestions. Hence, you are not covered.

Again, these were only examples, (not even sure if they could happen), but I wanted to see if anyone has had problems with the warranties. Is the warranty coverage mostly determined by each individual dealer, or is it pretty much the same standard from dealer to dealer?

I clogged up my intake when I was grilling hotdogs on my engine cover, will that be covered. I do love a fresh grilled hot dog on the road.

Seriously though, I have never heard of Scion denying a warranty claim unless it is due to gross negligence on the owners part. VW is a way different story.....

Put it this way. If my engine was to fail and I took it to the Dealership, they could not tell me it is not covered because of my doors. They have to prove that the modification you did is what caused the malfunction. Other than that, they cannot turn you away.

If you want some in-depth reading on warranties, Google "Magnusson-Moss Act".

The basic rule is, a warranty on a specific component remains intact unless the time has lapsed or that specific or a related component is replaced or altered.

Situation: You install lowering springs. You have now voided the warranty on your springs. The lowering springs alter the stance of the car, putting additional stress on steering and suspension of the car. 3 years later, both lower ball joints are shot. Your warranty on the ball joints could legitimately be voided due to the springs. However, if 3 years later, your sunroof motor dies, that is untouched.

In dealing with your situations, I'll assume that by the transmission "dying", you mean a physical breakdown of the internal components (clutches, rings, drums, etc.). If the computer you are referencing is an integral part of the powertrain (controls shifts, etc) then it should be covered under the powertrain warranty. If it is not a critical component, or if it is not related to the powertrain, then the damages to the transmission should be covered, but you would be on the hook for the replacement of the ECU.

Situation #2: I'm sure somewhere in the terms of your warranty, there is a clause voiding the terms for "abuse". Frequent redlining could be termed as "abuse", making it a legitimate claim.

"They have to prove that the modification you did is what caused the malfunction"

Correct, but backwards. If it comes down to blows, YOU have to prove that the modification that you made DIDN'T cause the failure. Anytime you modify a vehicle, you gamble with your warranty.

A warranty is NEVER voided. They can refuse service for a particular issue, but that doesnt void any part of the warranty for later use.

The search button is your friend. One of the most talked about items on the forums.

Search button, search button, search button. Yeah, I've tried that many times before.

Search for "warranty" - 9684 results found, then using filters, went down to only 5600

Search for "warranty void" - 1182 results found, using filters went down to only 626

Call me lazy, but I'm not going through 600+ posts to find what I need.

Besides, most of those posts weren't even about the warranty, just someone used the word warranty, and someone else posted a bs response that had nothing to do with the warranty.

Sorry about the rant, but the search button is semi-useless. Unless you have 3+ hours to sort through usless posts. I tried many different filters too, none of which helped too much. I don't meant to anger anyone, but it's just easier and quicker to post a new thread, and you guys answer it. L for lazy, not loser

But the thing is, why should we do your dirty work and help you if you are too lazy to do it yourself.
