There was a noise coming from the rear seat. I lifted the carpet behind the seat and found
a metal wire banging on the sheet metal backing. I added some foam purchased at Michael's
Craft store for $0.99 and applied it with double stick tape. Problem solved!

Since I bought my xB about a month ago I've been stoked on the car except for an annoying rattle coming from the back seat. It seemed to be coming from the passenger side seat latch. The noise would sometimes disappear for a short while...either in the morning when the car was cold/stiff, or after unlatching/relatching the seat ...and making sure the seat latch release button was fully seated. But the noise always came back after a few minutes. It wasn't real loud..but loud enough to really bug...especially after throwing down $16K for a new car!

I searched around on the forums to see if anyone had experienced the same problem. Dickpeter (his screenname??) posted that there was a Technical Service Bulletin out about similar rattle complaints. He sent me a copy of this TSB which I've posted at:

A week later I got a survey call from Scion corporate asking how I liked my new Scion. I told them all was good..except for the seat rattle. They were very quick to have my dealer contact me and arrange for the rattle to be checked out. I was very impressed by their willingness to make sure it got corrected.

I ended up taking the xB to the dealer today and they fixed it. All they appeared to have done is put a small piece of adhesive foam on the seat back catch. It seemed to have worked so far. The dealers have these "rattle kits" that are full of foam padding (similar to weatherstripping). The kit includes pieces to fit all kinds of rattle conditions (door/trunk/dash) but for my back seat they only used a small piece (about 1/2" x 1-1/2")...the mechanics left the rest of the 'kit' in my back seat (I don't know if they meant to leave it or just forgot it) I'll hold onto it...and I can use the foam tape on the back of my license plate when the DMV sends it. The rear license plate rattles on the back hatch (or at least the dealer logo plate did which I removed 1 block after I bought the car!)

If my xB comes with the dealer's plate.. the logo and stuff on it.. I'm going to whoop out my screwdriver and tell them "If you want me to advertise for you, you can pay some of my bill"

The 3 smaller clips are a pain to remove. They seem to be different then the larger one. I used the appropriate panel popper tool, and it still did not come easy.

I am heading to the dealer in a bit for them to take care of it. If they have a kit let them use it! I paid for the extended warranty!

the back seat latch rattle can be cured in 30 seconds.

Take a piece of electrical tape, and wrap it around the rod that the back seat latches to.

now the latch cathes snugly against the soft black tape...and does not rattle.

no need for warrantee service.

yup...that's pretty much how the dealer fixed it. Except he used a foam padding strip..which has already worn through and the rattle is coming back. It's not a big deal...but it is f***king annoying.

dont forget you guys have warranties :D

Although dealerships hate chasing down rattles b/c they make no money doin it (trust me i used to have to do it) they still have to fix the problem.
