Recieved the Pioneer D3 in the mail yesterday.
Got the unit, the mounting kit, the wiring kit and the rear view camera. (still need to install the rearview)
Took about an hour and a half to install. There are plenty of installs out there, so I will only include the parts of the install that arent easily done.
Here are the pictures with some install pics.
You use the original mounting brackets from the stock unit. You can use it with out modifying it but the door wont close.
I took a 3/16" drill bit and drilled out the detents in the stock brackets. This allowed me to recess the unit. You only need to drill out the front two detents but I didnt know and did all four.

You then attach the metra mounting kit over the brackets and screw in.

Attached

I mounted the GPS reciever behind the right side a pillar. It is magnetic so it sticks perfect and cant be seen. Ran the wiring behind the glove box and to the unit.

The reverse wire is attached to the white plug PINK WIRE behind the glovebox. Just used a crimp tap to attach to the wire.

The speed sensor wire is on the HVAC unit, orange wire pin 14. I didnt have any more crimps, so I peeled back the insulation and soldered and then taped it.

Here you can see the finished product:

I will give feedback after I use it for a few days

)
I definitely would like to hear your feedback on the GPS Receiver position on the A-Pillar. Looks good bro! I can't decide on the D3 or Alpine 205.

thanks!!
I just went to the store and so far I am not happy with the GPS. My wife has the Pioneer d2 in her car. On the trip around the block to the store, the GPS jumped to a surrounding road twice. My d2 doesnt do that.
And the D3 while playing a CD, you cant hit return home while listening to a cd. You have to insert the NAVI DVD.
On the D2 it has 2 slots and you can do both at the same time.
I would reccomend the D2 over the D3 so far. but I will be putting a Playstation or 360 in at some point so I can use that for music.

hey how much did you get the HU for... and i ahve an rs2 and i have the side air bags and i wont be able to isntall the GPS sensor their.. any tips on putting it some where else and still get a decent signal?
mines on the driver corner of the dash.. iono if you can open the a pillar still without hte things going off on you tho..
looks great nick! yeah the whole CD thing is a bummer me thinks, but the ipod integration is awesome imo
so the whole cd thing isnt even that bad. and also give a while for the GPS to learn and sense it self. i was in los angeles (i live in norcal in san jose) when i first hooked it up and after a while it learned and got more accurate
congrats and good job!
edit: did you also install a rear view camera?

You can install the gps anywhere. I choose there because it was out of the way. Alot of people do the dash or behind the glove box.
I am going to install the rearview camera tonight. i ran the video line but not all the way to the trunk yet. I was beat last night.

IMO, the easiest mounting location for the GPS receiver:

Never had reception problems, even in downtown. Don't forget the metal plate! There's a divot in the vent perfect for fitting the receiver.

I will have to try it. I couldnt tell how the GPS was today, I had a cd in and of course the map zooms out when the navi disc isnt in. I wish I had the D2. Maybe my wife will switch with me.
I doubt it tho.

Don't forget to wrap the thing in some foam so it stays put. The blue stuff you see in the pic is the foam. The new xB factory nav has the GPS antenna in a similar location under the dash. Like I said reception was never an issue, but the problem you experienced is prob more related to the software & accuracy of the unit. Because the D3 isn't WAAS enabled it isn't as accurate as a Garmin GPS. And even on a Garmin Nuvi it can get confused. I was on a large road with a small road running on either side of it and the Garmin thought I was on the small road. It was only a 5 foot difference between the two roads.
Great thread - I needed a stealth spot to put the gps..but I've also looked all over and can't find a thread where someone shows specifically where they grounded the parking brake wire - that is all I need for my unit's hack - can anyone offer me some advice?
