Default Factory ABS + Factory 18" rims.. recalibration?

Does anyone know if Scion recalibrates the factory ABS system depending on which wheels your car comes with?

The way I've seen ABS systems setup is that there's normally metal ticks on the hub, with a magnetic pickup that detects when your wheels lockup (ticks dont slide through the pickup).

When you get bigger wheels, the ABS will get triggered prematurely because the larger circumference means it will kick in before the tires completely lock up.

So does Scion recalibrate the ABS, or do they sell new cars with ABS that doesn't work quite as well with 18" rims?

:? Not sure, I thought the ABS sensor was on the hub of the car, that way it would not matter what wheel size you are running. :? :?:

I don't think the ABS is predictive; I think it actually detects the hub locking. I did get a chirp out of the tires when I tested the ABS on the demo car.

the abs sensor is in the hub.. not any part of the wheel.. hope that helps.. even if you went to a correct plus one wheel upgrade the diameter will not change from stock, that still does not affect the abs..

I don't know what tires come with the 18" rims, but shouldn't the exterior diameter of wheel + tire be the same no matter which ones you have? I think wheels it's a dealer installed option; if the exterior diameter changes, the odometer has to be recalibrated as well and AFAIK the dealer is not allowed to do that.

cornel..

exactly.. if a "plus one" upgrade was done correctly.. diameter SHOULD NOT change..
abs has its sensors in the hub anyway..

If it's on the hub and the tire is larger overall, it will effect ABS & the Odometer. If the overall size doesn't change, it won't. Even if the notches are on the hub, the tire is what touches the ground. And a larger (overall) tire will effect ABS.

But it sounds like the sidewall is reduced on the 18s, which answers my question.

yes you're right the side wall is reduced, while the wheel diameter increases.. so yes you're right..
