Default CAI question...

I plan to buy bomz CAI.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Bomz-...spagenameZWDVW
Because I dont want to spend money like $300
anyway... I think I need a bypass for CAI...so I searched,
AEM
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AEM-2...spagenameZWDVW
UNIVERSAL
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-5-U...spagenameZWDVW
I want to buy cheaper one.. but do you think the universal one works well?
and there are many size of bypass, like 3" and 2.5" 2.75"... which one fit on bomz CAI?

I'll just say that you get what you pay for. And cheaping out on engine components JUST because they're cheaper isn't something I'd consider doing.

That said, I'm sure many people have no issues with the BOMZ stuff... but I wouldn't put it on an 87 Escort if I had one...

i wouldn't touch that bomz thing.... just get an INJEN CAI. you can pick them up for $200 if you know where to look. don't worry about the bypass valve thing. unless you're trying to drive through puddles that are up to your bumper you'll be fine. i drive through heavy rain all the time with mine with zero problems *knocks on wood*

I am sure it'll work fine for ya, A pipe is a pipe and as long as the MAF sensor fits in there nice and snug, you will have no problem. Are some pipes slightly better at keeping the air cooler, sure, but not worth the extra money for the already minimal gains that you would get with ANY cai.

The aem bypass valve is the one the get if you feel that you need it. It can't hurt. Another option in addition or instead of is the injen hydroshield.

You don't want to go cheap on something like that. An air intake (especially a CAI) is more than just elaborate tubbing. The length, diameter, bends, and the location of the MAF all play a role. Good companies put a lot of R&D into it. Sure you pay more for an Injen for instance, but besides their logo you are also paying for their R&D, not just some tubing thrown together. If you want tubbing, can do even cheaper than $50 + shipping on ebay. If that intake completely throws of your A/F ratio then you will be paying for a lot more than $250 in the long run.

If companies put R&D into their CAI's, then we wouldn't be hearing about broken mounting tabs and pipes rubbing in the wheelwell.

Put that money toward something that does something, like summer tires or a rear sway bar. Or make some noticable power with F/I.

I am talking about keeping your MAF correct and accurate and you are talking about tabs. There are many ways to prevent broken brackets, catalytic and internals, not so much.

i used to be into that stupid intake exhaust header altezzas bull____ when i was like 17, but now i have a nice car and i think back how dumb all that ____ was. ur spending close to a grand on parts that give u very little hp gain, and a whole lotta noise. id say save up for things like window tint, a sexy drop, some sway bars, supercharger or even turbo. dont waste ur money and look like every other ricer with loud muffles on their civics and their ebay altezzas

Dude... you're only 20 now. You're talking like you're 35 and "grew out of" all that stuff or something. It was only 3 yrs ago according to your post...

Comparing intake/header/performance related mods to something like fart cans and clear tails?? Come on...

No, you're not going to get crazy gains from ANY fairly simple mod like that... but this is just another way for people to add some HP without breaking the bank on FI. And suspension is a whole other category...

Yes, some people are stupid about it... you will ALWAYS have people buying $30 autozone mufflers thinking they're fast now. But to put a thread like this on the same level as altezzas??

Wouldn't you say it's far easier for a company to correct poor fitment than it is to optimize AFR? Do you really think they would take the time through dozens of test to perfect MAF placement, while ignoring the obviously poor designs that you can see by just plain looking at the installed part, such as rubbing?

Every CAI will rubs, it's not just the Injen, nor does it mean its poorly designed. Its a long tube starting from your throttle body optimized to give you most power while keeping your A/F ratio as close to stock as possible with only 2 mounts to work with. What did you expect? Your engine moves as so does your transmission, get an engine damper, engine mounts, or zpi engine limiter., or doctor isotopes cai mount.

That's like being satisfied with an axleback that burns a bumper on an otherwise stock exhaust system. Everybody has the same knowledge of how the car is shaped. Did Doc Iso come up with a wildly revolutionary idea with his CAI panel? Not really, but it truly is the most simple and elegant solution to the problem. How did one man come up with that product, while the "R&D" branches of major manufacturers didn't even recognize that it was a very common problem by releasing a new revision of their existing products? That's because there is little to no "R&D" done on any CAI aside from "does it fit". How else can that be explained?

I don't understand how a rubbing CAI is not poorly designed. Did you ever look at a CAI after it's been rubbing for a few thousand miles? The "tuned" aluminum tube gets a nice hole in it, where it will suck unfiltered air through.

Poor design? Isn't that the definition of poor design?

Agreed. I actually purchased the part we're discussing, along with a gearswitcher ultimate.

When I sold my CAI, i did the guy a favor by insisting he buy the CAI plate. Otherwise he would be riding around with a hole in his CAI pipe right now.

Monkeysauce, they design the CAIs to provide the most power, not to minimize rubbing. If there was a market for minimal rubbing intakes I am sure there would be a slightly different marketing campaign. Having said that, I don't know what your experience with cars is but rubbing is very common. It rubs because of the engine movement. You also have to consider how much space there is to work with in the tc particularly. The tc's fender leaves very little room for a tube. The little remaining room is a lot less than the engine movement created by your driving. There is no way around it in the tc unless you bend those fender plates. To reiterate, any tube will rub.

Let's agree to disagree, we're not going to see eye to eye here. In the end, we'd both tell the OP not to buy the ebay intake, however for different reasons.

what is "R&D" mean? sorry I dont have perfect English skills.
I also want to install swaybars, strutbars and lowering springs like that.
I really want to do it. but I'm a student and I got a part time job.
I pay most my money for my tc's monthly payment, so it is hard to spend many money for my car. I meann , there is no chance for gymkhana or driving on circuit.I never do driving with tire burn.
And some winding road in my town, there are many runnig or jogging people, riding bicycles, and cop. anfter sun goes down, I cant even enter the place. they blok the enterance. So I dont have to spend money to that way.. For me, improving driving technic is important than making my car's looks btter. I have no choice cuz I'm student, so I just want to work something on my car myself. I think, to install intake things easy, so I just want to do it. what i can do is driving on highway, right?
So I want to feel how my car's feelings are different. while I run.(I dont drive like more than 70~80~100mph on street. dont worry )
hm..anyway........so everyone think injen or maker's things are better?
