Default Yet Another new xB2 owner! 19" TRDs? Mistake?

Yup here I am, another addition to the Scion Owners Cult!

Here's the rundown...
Classic Silver

19" TRD Wheels, No lowering springs (yet?)

So I love the 19" TRD Wheels. I know most people dont really want them because so many people have them already, but I just love the look of them.

Anyways, I live in SoCal right now but moving up to Portland, OR next year. I know the road conditions there are different than down here, thats why I opted not to go with the Lowering Springs, but my question is.... did i make a mistake going with the 19" TRD wheels and then "rubber band" tires for living in Portland?

it is up to you, if you can tolerate the harsher ride on those big wheels with skinny tires, and you love the look, your fine.

Last time I checked... last weekend they still had roads. Yes, we are in the northwest but you should be fine. It rains a little more but it keeps are streets free of oil and crap. You should slam the hell out of your box, put it on some bags.

You should be fine. I have driven on TRD 19's with lowering springs for over a year, and never had any issues. There might be one or two days a year that you will have issues, but EVERYBODY has issues on those days!

Sounds like you are use to driving on low profile tires so you should be fine, my wife CoreyAnn (Mocascion) does not like the ride in the winter time and at times gets scared driving in the rain on low profile tires. For her I swap out the wheels and low profile tires for the stock tires during the winter.

As long as you are careful about parking lot entrances you should be fine with a lowered car up here especially with the TRD springs. I had my previous car about three inches off the ground and that didn’t work well at all.

Yeah, you should be fine for the most part. The Portland area has pretty good weather for the most part and they do keep up their roads a bit better then Seattle area.

I just moved here from So CaL also, where I never drove anything unless it was lowered and low pro. The difference definitely took some initial getting used to - there are lots of potholes from the wet winters and road construction going on in Portland right now. But if you are already used to driving on low pros and you dont mind paying close attention to the road, then you'll be fine!

One thing I was amazed to discover is the freeway conditions are soooo much better than So Cal. Cruising up the 5 here is 10x better than the 5 in So Cal!

Ya that is pretty much what I was thinking. Probably a bunch more potholes out there cuz of the rain. I dont mind the rough ride, its just the fear of catching a pothole and well ya know.... cracking/bending the rim! ahhhhhh!

Thanks everyone for the feed back.

Even with the amount of rain we get, I can not think of many streets in portland or seattle that have that many potholes. Especially ones large enough to do damage. Sure on the side roads, ones that are more residential that main city roads you will run into a possible monster but overall shouldnt be too bad.

Welcome to the pac nw man! Well at least soon!

I agree with ..um.. everyone!

Seriously though - there arent'a whole lot of streets that will sneak up on you. It's rare to find a Portland street with a random pothole that will come out of nowhere. Usually it's the whole street (still rare) that is jacked up. So you would already be driving slow to avoid them.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks guys! Hey what about with heavy rains and stuff? I know not much snow ever gets to portland but as for 19"? in that kind of weather? Man, i dont know anything about driving in that weather. How will the 19" handle? any different?

Maybe its time to bust out the old DMV drivers ed book so i can remember how to drive in inclement weather!

The only time I've seen snow in Portland was a freak storm that came out of nowhere a little over a year ago. It turned to ice as soon as it hit the ground, it took me nine hours to get back to Seattle. I was driving a new stock xA.

As long as you have good tread, it shouldn't be too much of an issue...if it is, stay home.

Not to scare you off, but there are ice storms down there. Portland is known for ice storms up here. But just be smart about it, like many people are down there. Work and business closures happen up here more frequent than I know of from eastern washington. We get an inch and apparently hell just broke free from its depths. So its really no biggy because the entire population of seattle/portland freak out.

I say just give it a shot the best way to figure it out is to just do it! The rain takes some getting used to I'm sure but it's not so bad

you will be fine we actually have pot hole patrols up here and anything that there is, is very quickly fixed. and about the only time that you will find them is on the less used roads, the more heavily travel roads will be very well maintained. And the lowering springs heck slam the thing, we don't have the rain culverts that exist in Cali if you get around those then you can go anywhere up here. On the very few days that it snows up here in the northwest it all shuts down so you jst stay at home and have a snow day and lots of videos or videos games.

You will be fine up here and when it gets really sloppy because of the rain it can get a little fun almost feels like hydroplanning, but you are still safe with the traction control that you have on the "B", the one htat I drive does just fine and I have already had it in several down pores up here.

It actually snowed here this year in winter and stuck around a couple of days. I have dedicated snow tires for my tC and it was fine, but I wouldn't suggest the 19's in snow/ice.
