Took a new XB hood and a Celica GT hood, and with a little cutting and welding, ended up with this.
OrAnGeBoX 10-18-2004, 03:16 AM thats pretty fly right there now make a reverse hood or cowl induction

Max2k 10-18-2004, 04:16 AM Pretty rad, is that the JDM speed grill?
windowtint 10-18-2004, 04:59 AM Very Very nice - for a damn change.
You did a very nice job from the design standpoint and followed through with what looks to be nice fabrication.
The design is in complete sycnh with the xB's existing shape. Most every new redesign up to this point has completely ignored the existing styling and had very rounded shapes or large protruding scoops. The recessed semi-flush scoop effect keeps the smooth flat profile appearance and the Celica's bridge has just enough curvature to it's square shape to follow the xB's design.
Something else that is very nice - it's the same color as the damn car!!! God I am so tired of seeing cars that look like they're in the middle of getting body work done and looking like they haven't gotten around to painting the hood yet (....carbon fiber).
I would vote this the nicest hood design yet. Bonus points for using an existing Toyota MoCo design and parts - kept it looking like something that could possibly be OEM.
There'll soon be "Lowbox hood" copies everywhere
A+
PandaIst 10-18-2004, 05:22 AM That looks sweet! :P
djct_watt 10-18-2004, 05:46 AM i wonder how something like that would look on an xA. . .
looks so nice man!
Dam that looks good! That would explain the missing scoop on my neighbors celica GTS.  Seriously though that looks hot man! Wanna trade for my lunch? I got tuna and a jello pudding cup! :D
ashorn 10-18-2004, 09:32 AM I got to know, where did you get the grill. Make, contact info, price ??

lowbox 10-18-2004, 11:33 AM Getting ready for work so I will have to make it short... as for the underside of the hood , I have reworked the bracing so the stock hood insulation will fit back in place. There will be a hole cut in the insulation under the scoop.
As for the grill and the headlights, both of these I have done myself. I will go into more detail this evening. I will post pics of the underside of the hood when it is finished.
Thanks for the A+ 8)
If you decide to mold & produce that hood I'll be first in line to buy one. Nicest one I've seen.
Munch 10-18-2004, 02:04 PM That is Sweet 8) . That's the best hood I've seen yet for the XB.
squirrel 10-18-2004, 04:35 PM WOW! Nice hood and headlight conversion!
HAWAIIANBUILT 10-18-2004, 05:52 PM That is an awesome hood.
I agree, I like that style alot better than most of the ones that others have tried to fabricate.
The lines are smooth and still true to the xB design.
Great job on that.
Any plans for special order?

Al-Truistic 10-18-2004, 07:40 PM Easily the bst fitting disign of any hood scoop so far. Many kudos! Do you notice any change in performance or wind noise? I know our Scions aren't big under the hood but, just wondering...
I especially like the fact that it is not so "different" or huge that it looks out of place on the xB. Alot of the hood scoop mods before yours seem to be way over done and not true to the aesthetic of the Scion.
Congratulations on your well-executed mod! :D
Old_Punk 10-18-2004, 08:37 PM I agree. Very nice -- and original. But I imagine it's way too subtle and tasteful for the look-at-me-look-at-me crowd.
Fujiz_xb 10-18-2004, 08:43 PM i agree best scoop ever..wanna trade for my stock hood?
Mr_scion 10-18-2004, 08:52 PM we need more pix!!!!!

 that looks hot. i sport one on my ride. :D
windowtint 10-19-2004, 02:08 AM well... I gave it a day to think about it... and even though I have a serious dislike of people who have zero originality and rip off others designs - I think I'm gonna have to break my own 'rule' and jack your design for my own.
It's just too nice and I will have it for my own!! muawahahahahaha!

lowbox 10-19-2004, 02:49 AM Thanks for all the compliments! I was trying to come up with a hood that looked like it could be factory.
As for building these to sell, I don't think I will be doing that. Cost involved: XB Hood from dealership $140.00 Used Celica GT Hood w/scoop $150.00 Paint and other supplies $150.00 and countless hours of work.
I would have to charge $800.00 a hood  I think that would be a bit to much.
Here is a picture of the underside of the hood, before it was painted. I will post more pics, once I put the windshield squirters and insulation back in.
One again thanks for the compliments!

hotbox05 10-19-2004, 03:19 AM i'd do it myself but i'm pretty sure id measure wrong. got any blue prints or anything?
Al-Truistic 10-19-2004, 03:13 PM So cool and stealth...sorry to hear it won't be hitting the assembly line. Thanks for the cost breakdown and for sure it was expensive with the hand work you put in.
Could you maybe walk through what it took to do it?
I really want to hear what your thought process was and what considerations were made with measurement, placement and <!cringe!> cuttng into the hood. I can dream can't I?
Do you thihnk you might take more pix of your ride so we could see thge whole car and what it looks like from a few different angles to see the impact of your mod to the whole body?
Simply awesome. :D

lowbox 10-20-2004, 03:01 AM Ok....I guess I will start with the grill.....this is the ultimate Ghetto MOD! I was in Walmart one day, and something caught my eye, gutter screen....thats right, I said Gutter screen
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4ce38b3127ccea8aaf208e4b30000002010
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4ce38b3127ccea8aaf2dee4650000002010
This is a very simple MOD. Take your grill out, and cut the whole center out of the grill, leaving the outer framework of the grill. It is going to be about a half of an inch of grill left all the way around. Take the gutter screen, put it over the front of the grill. Folding the ends over the left and right side of the grill. I used 4 small trim screws to attach the mesh to the grill. You won't be able to see them, because the are on the sides of the grill. The reinstall your grill. Close your hood, allowing the excess gutter screen to stick up above the hood. Take a marker and draw a line across the screen where it willl need to be cut. Leave about a quarter of an inch gap between the mesh and the hood. Then take a piece of door edge trim to finish the top of the grill. I painted mine black but I am sur eyou could paint it to match your particular color.

lowbox 10-20-2004, 03:28 AM For me, it is kind of hard to write a step by step "how to" I have always been able to see something and visualize the way I want it to look. Then I do pretty much anything I need to, to make it match the picture in my head.
In this instance, the first thing I had to do was remove the center from the celica hood. I did this by basically running a pin stripe from back to front about a quarter of an inch from where the center dips in. Then, I cut that section out.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4ce39b3127ccea8bc2ea1bc5d0000002610
After this was done, I took the celica center, turned it upside down so it would set flat on top of the XB hood. I measured from side to side to make sure it was centered and lined the back of the celica piece with the back of the XB hood. I took a marker and traced the outline. Then I took off a cut off wheel and proceeded to cut on the inside of the line until the center of the XB hood was cut out. Then I took the celica center and began welding it in starting at the back of the hood. Slowly working my way forward having to grind a little here and there to make the two sections fit as close as possible.
Then comes the hard part. Filler, primer and a lot of sanding.

sorry I don't have more pics of the actual process but I get so caught up in working that i forget to take them.

Very nice work bro.
windowtint 10-20-2004, 03:56 AM "GIMME A STEP-BY-STEP HOW-TO!!"
Umm.. for those that want a "how-to"..... DUDE!!! If you need a how-to article on this 'mod' --- do you seriously believe that YOU should be the one doing it????
If you can't already do this without a manual.... print out pics of his hood and drop the car off at a bodyshop
....although I shouldn't probably even say anything at all - nevermind, go ahead - get the sawzall and have at it...
This is not one of those "well.. I'm pretty handy with stuff... I can probably do it." things.
lowbox 10-20-2004, 04:14 AM thank's for saying that . I was going to but i didn't want to hurt any one's feeling's, you know how politically correct some people are
lowbox 10-20-2004, 04:33 AM by the way the company i work for ( RPM OUTLET.COM ) has offerd to front me an ATI PRO CHARGER that will make 6 to 8 psi , I am working on the mounting bracket and pipeing and hope to have it on and pumping by the end of the year

CubiXBb 10-20-2004, 06:46 PM Good job on the hood! :D I like what you did with the grill..very clean. Just curious, what type of suspension setup do you have? Springs & shocks, coilovers, or bagged? Whatever it is, I like the stance

You've got the wheels turning in my head....I might have to "borrow" your idea & fab one for myself.
I give you mega respect for putting your original idea into reality.
You may seriously think about mass producing this hood in 'glass or CF. I could all but guarantee you'd be a rich man in no time.
Awesome original idea in a world where they are hard to come by. My hat's off to you.

Of course you can buy another hood at the dealership --- why in the world would they NOT sell one? I've bought a few of them. Business cost is somewhere roughly around $140 - that's not retail, which I believe is somewhere around $170? $180?. You can buy whatever part you want except the unibody structure, that's what they do at the PARTS department.
