I'm about to buy some coilovers for my car in the upcoming weeks, but I keep trying to figure out what will and what won't, cover or void my warranty. Is there an online pdf file, or a book of this nature?

Reason I'm asking is I do all my own work, I don't like the idea of forking out another grand for having Toyota install simple coilovers. At the same time, I don't want to install them on my own, and have an issue later on with the car that might me to take it to the dealer. For example, if my transmission fails, I need to know if the coilevers, or anyother aftermarket part might affect the way the dealer looks at my car.

Its obvious Toyota designed the TC for the "tuner" market, so obviously they expect aftermarket parts to be on their cars. I just need to know how leniant they are or etc, etc. Any information or personal experiance is welcome.

 

ive read on here that there is legal protection for that. toyota would have to prove that the part you installed affected the part you are trying to get them to fix/replace...now dont try to get any part of the suspension replaced after you install the coilovers..but you should be safe for the warrenty on everything else.....

when i went to get my complimentary oilchange they tried to get me to pay them to rotate my tires adn i told i would do it myself and he seemed concerned so i asked if it would affect my warranty adn he said i would be fine but that i might have trouble getting toy. to replace my tires if say, they didnt wear even....i would never think something like tires would be covered in the first place.


..i read the article about it only a few weeks ago so try adn search for it. it was regarding someone instally a catback exhaust themselves.

 

there's plenty of topics on this. just as long as ur coilovers don't kill any other part of the car, your good. if something breaks or malfunctions and it wasnt caused by the coilovers ur still good. if it was caused by ur coilovers, the warranty will NOT be voided, it jus won't cover it.

Basically what it says about modifications is that damage or performance problems resulting from the modification may not be covered under warranty. Scion has not tested after market parts/accessories; therefore, Scion does not have comprehensive information on how they may affect the operation of your vehicle.... and therefore damage caused by it may void warranty on the component that it damages....

 

Here is where I found out differently: I spoke to the service guy at the local stealership here and here's what he told me: if you use TRD parts, parts designed by toyota for toyota cars, they WILL NOT void your warranty, which I understood. But then I asked him about installation. I said, well do I have to have them installed here to keep the warranty. He said NO. He said there is no way they can try to void your warranty using OEM parts for your car. However, he did tell me that if you put them on yourself or from a local garage, they will only warrant the parts (that you just put on) for 1year/12000 miles. If the dealership puts them in, they will warrant the parts for 3/36000. So basically he told me that I can put them on myself and the warranty of the vehicle will not be affected (and I asked him this question specifically). Now don't get me wrong, if you put in a supercharger and you did it completely wrong and blew your engine up, yea, I'm going to guess that they won't cover for you being an idiot. But overall, if you use TRD parts, the vehicle will remain in warranty. HTH

 

^^ That sounds about right. The only part of the warrenty that will be void is the warranty on the part you replaced or what ever you replaced causes damage. For instance my case: I, like many have lowering springs (Hotchkis in my case). The dealership won't replace those should they break. The dealership also won't replace my OEM struts when they blow because they blew due to the stiffer springs. I don't see how coil overs could break anything personally.
