View Full Version : experience with aftermarket steering wheels
StreetStarsTc 12-04-2007, 04:24 AM i wanna know who has aftermarket steering wheels on their tc's
how was the install
i know its illegal
has any1 goten away with it
if not
whats the penalty from the pigs
some dude that owns a shop told me its a federal offense for them to install aftermarket steering wheel unless its a track car
i was thinkin about nrg steering wheel
idk..is it worth the risk..no airbag or nice steering wheel
thanks
draxcaliber 12-04-2007, 04:27 AM it is illegal, but it probably wouldn't be a primary offense, officer would only notice it once you get pulled over, and ofcourse, if your state has inspections on a regular basis.
and then, you know, heaven forbid, you should crash, and your aftermarket steering wheel fails to deploy, you like die or something, because you wanted to be cool and what not by removing safety equipment from your car. it is up to you whether or not risking your life and breaking the law are worth it.
Yanki01 12-04-2007, 04:28 AM i think the only people that have use it for show only? Dont see any advantages at all? Stock wheel is fine unless your wanting the F&F look?

x2. stock is just fine
draxcaliber 12-04-2007, 04:43 AM no way, aftermarket ones turn like 20% more, and have like less rotational mass, and buttons for your two stages of nitrous, and a flat bottom for steering with your knees! you know, everything you need to be a terrific driver.

shadow12one 12-05-2007, 04:48 AM lets see how long this goes on before a mod locks this down...

djct_watt 12-06-2007, 08:57 AM The purpose of an aftermarket wheel is for true race track use. Off the track, there is no point.
A smaller wheel diameter means that you have effectively increased the steering response (since less hand movement results in greater turning). For track use, it can be useful. For street use, an competent driver should be able to compensate with our stock wheel. It's not THAT bad. And if it's really such a big deal, there are plenty of OEM Toyota wheels with airbags that can be rigged up to work.
But again, for all the super go fast naaaaaaaaaaaaaaws people. . . it goes hand in hand with the oversized wheels, big spoiler, and billions and billions of stickers.
hawgs74 12-06-2007, 02:45 PM Or for people who like a clean look. Ill take a four-point harness over an airbag anyday.

StreetStarsTc 12-06-2007, 04:35 PM thats true
it looks nice
but 4 point harnesses are pretty sweet
djct_watt 12-06-2007, 05:17 PM You know 4 pt. Harnesses are designed with the intent to be used with a helmet, right?
If you know anybody who professionally races, and is older than 25 (read: has EXPERIENCE), they'll tell you how important a helmet can be. And they'll also tell you how important a fire retardant system is, when you can't remove your 4 pt after a heavy crash. I'd be curious to find out how effective 5 pt harnesses are on off track applications.
StreetStarsTc 12-06-2007, 08:10 PM i know.
a friend of mine has a track car with 5 pt harness and has to wear an insane amount of fire-proof clothing and a helmet..one with the visors
and i believe it depends on how fast your car is on the track
but wouldn't it be hard to have the 4 or 5 point seat harnesses on stock seats right?
im pretty sure you would need aftermarket seats
im not sure tho

no offense but i think that looks dumb with no steering wheel there.... thats not clean a car is supposed to have a steering wheel.... thats like taking the engine out of the engine bay and calling under the hood clean....
