View Full Version : xB really easy to work on.
erichlf 11-15-2004, 03:04 AM I just wanted to voice my elation about how easy it is to work on this car. The hardest thing to do so far is clearing the headlights. Man those reflectors are a pain to get out. Ended up using the oven tech much easier, a bit messy though.
I have never had a car that was so easy to remove and replace parts. Normally when I put a stereo system in I break something. This time everything popped right out and popped right back in. Looks super clean. Thank you Toyota for making my life easier.
hotbox05 11-15-2004, 04:06 AM damn straight. very easy which equals very nice

what kinds of cars have you had before?
Max2k 11-15-2004, 05:36 AM On the real, it cost my dad $400 or something to get the air condioning serviced on his 1990 Taurus SHO because it was a 3 hour job to take the dashboard apart. I can take the dash off my xB in 20 minutes. I love it!
erichlf 11-15-2004, 04:12 PM what kinds of cars have you had before?
I had a 2004 VW GTI 1.8T, 2003 VW Jetta (R.I.P.), 2001 Hyundai Accent, and a 1996 Geo Metro. All a pain in the arse to do stereo work.
Louisville327 11-15-2004, 04:25 PM I expected a pretty huge difference from the ease of work I was used to on my old school Ford F-150, but the xB has a ton of room even in its tiny engine compartment.
I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, I would be even more surprised (and not so pleasantly) if the Scion requires as much work on it as the stupid Ford...
DJ_X_Trodinaire 11-15-2004, 04:27 PM XB For LIFE!

Yes, and xBs are the best of all the Scions. Way to go Toyota! 8)

I have a 2001 GTI 1.8t too. I don't think it's hard to work on, as long as you have a torx bit, but with how easy it is to replace the head unit on the xB... fuggetaboudit 8)
TheScionicMan 11-15-2004, 06:02 PM I could probably strip the interior of an xB in about an hour with nothing more than a Leatherman tool. I am always pleased with how easy things come apart and go back together. Those Toyota engineers really know their stuff. They're my new heroes.
Louisville327 11-15-2004, 06:30 PM I could probably strip the interior of an xB in about an hour with nothing more than a Leatherman tool.
There should be a contest to see who could do it fastest.
erichlf 11-15-2004, 06:34 PM I did my entire stereo system yesterday in less than 2 hrs.
Max2k 11-15-2004, 07:06 PM Seriously, give me a 10mm socket, a 12mm socket, a philips head screwdriver, and some allen wrenches and I'll have your interior apart in an hour or less.
erichlf 11-15-2004, 07:22 PM For the sound system install all I needed was a 12 mm, 10mm, and phillips head screw driver. Oh yeah and a butter knife for center console. Getting through the fire wall was really easy. Had a nice gasket for all the other wires and just went through that. All the side pannels popped out like nothing.
Old_Punk 11-15-2004, 11:45 PM I imagine Toyota was thinking ahead, realizing they would offer Scions with a bunch of dealer add-ons and market them as a customizable rides. So they made it easy for dealers to add stuff (time is money) and for owners to add even more stuff.
TheScionicMan 11-16-2004, 12:17 AM It more likely is designed for easy assembly at the factory. it's just a bonus for us they did it well.

i did my stereo and i finished it like an 1hr. the panels and firewall hole is great!
erichlf 11-16-2004, 02:07 AM It took me 2 hrs partly cuz I was teaching my wife how to wire a amp.
chadfo 11-16-2004, 02:50 AM The XB has by far the easiest interior to disassemble I've ever worked with. I wish all vehicles had simliar designs.
BoomBox757 11-16-2004, 02:53 AM I love it!!!!! It makes me feel like I know what i'm doing
ROLLINGillusion 11-16-2004, 05:28 AM ok, im gonna be doing an install soon myself.
it's cold here right now, can someone show me a pic of this mysterious firewall hole ??
Also: how do i get the far back side panel off ??

I don't have a camera, but if you're facing your car, it'll be on the right side of the firewall. it's black, rubber, has a wire harness rinning through it already, and is about 3" in diameter. most amp kits will supply a gromet, as long as you have a drill, it'd be the best way to go. just make sure that you reference your new hole to the alreadt existing gromit, say maybe 2 inches to the left of it, to make sure you don't drill into anything important.
ROLLINGillusion 11-16-2004, 06:35 AM excellent
i'll look when i've got daylight
thanx
BoomBox757 11-16-2004, 09:30 PM get up under the drivers side dash with a flashlight and look got the wires that go through the wall
erichlf 11-17-2004, 01:39 AM I did not get the very back panel off but there are some spots that have little panels to take off. I used those to guide the wires.
hotbox05 11-17-2004, 02:31 AM anyone know how much sound deadening would be needed for a single layer application throughout the whole car?
BoomBox757 11-17-2004, 02:38 AM what very back panel? I've had every panel out of the car they are all easy
hotbox05 11-17-2004, 02:40 AM he probably means the rear side panels. they r kinda a _____. gotta pull out alotta stuff to get em off.
erichlf 11-17-2004, 06:46 PM I believe he was speaking of the ones in the "trunk space". I didn't even bother trying to figure those out. They had bolts on the inside, and I didn't even understand how that worked.
BoomBox757 11-17-2004, 10:36 PM ohh simple pop the top off the top part of the seatbelt, and unbolt it. take out the backseat bottom and unbolt the bottom of the seat belt. then pull the top out then the bottom
erichlf 11-19-2004, 02:29 AM Okay, just installed my new exhaust. The hardest part was getting the old one out. Putting the new one in was so easy, I thought I was doing it wrong. lol Hopefully I didn't.
ROLLINGillusion 11-19-2004, 04:32 AM thanks boombox, your tips will come in extremely handy.
BoomBox757 11-19-2004, 10:41 PM no problem I'm glad I could help out, if theres anything the people in my area can vouch for, its me taking the box apart
erichlf 11-23-2004, 04:40 PM Put on my exhaust. So easy thought I did it wrong. Putting in the intake was harder, but only because of all the things that have to be disconnected and reconnected.
moore 11-13-2005, 07:12 PM ok, im gonna be doing an install soon myself.

Just drill? Are there any other pre-existing holes at all? I definitely cannot fit my 8gauge wire through the existing grommet, that harness takes up too much of it. But I'm nervous about drilling through. Are there any other options?

hotbox05 11-13-2005, 07:59 PM just cut the grommet and slip the wire through
