Hello again.
The only way to turn you foglights on is with your headlights. What this mod will do is let you turn you foglights on with your corner lights. You will be able to turn the foglights off and on aswell. The foglights will work just like stock but they will come on with the corner lights instead of the headlights. I think it looks good with the corners and the foglights on.

This mod should only take 45min-1hour.

Here we go.

You will need to take your center dash off. To do that you need to take off all 3 of your a/c knobs.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/fogs20001.jpg

Unscrew the 2 screws at either end of the a/c knobs.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1474.jpg

Grab the top of your dash and pull down and out to pop it off.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1479.jpg

On the back of the consult you will find 3 wire harness.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1481.jpg

Unplug all 3 of them to get your center dash free.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1482.jpg

Now grab the lower consult and pull that out.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1484.jpg

Now depending on what year you have you will find 2 or 3 harness on the back of it.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1485.jpg

Unplug all of them to get it free.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1486.jpg

At the back of the ceter dash on the left is a bolt, unscrew it .
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1488.jpg

Attach 2 9inch wires to an open connector. (These 2 wires are going to be your ground wires)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1491.jpg

Screw the bolt and connector back in.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1492.jpg

Now find the harness that was connected to the foglight switch and cut the loom open.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1487.jpg

Cut the black wire.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1497.jpg

On the end attached to the plug connect a 9inch wire to it.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1498.jpg

Use electrical tape to tape the loom back together with the wire sticking out.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1499.jpg

Side note.
For my ignition wire I taped into the parking light 12v so the fogs come off/on with the parking lights.
Another ignition wire you can use is the cig lighter 12v. Doing it this way turns the fog lights into "running lights" that come on when the key is on - but you can still switch them off using the fog light switch.

In the center of the dash were you disconnected the 3 wire harness find the bigger harness.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1493.jpg

Unrap the electrical tape and find and splice open the green wire.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1494.jpg

Connect a 16inch wire to the green wire and wrap it back up with electrical tape. Run the other end of the wire down to the bottom of the dash were the other wires are.(This wire is going to be your ignition wire)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1495.jpg

Attach one of these connectors to the 4 wires that you now have.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1501.jpg

You should now have 4 wires that look like this.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1502.jpg

You will need to go out and buy a relay form you local auto parts store.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1467.jpg

Here is the wiring diogram that I used.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/foglightschematic2.jpg

This is what the bottom of the relay is going to look like.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1496.jpg

Plug in the wires were the diagram says to put them. This is what the relay will look like with all of the wires attached.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1505.jpg

Put the relay in a place were nothing will mess with it.
And your all done. Just put your dash back together and turn on your foglights buy turning on your corner lights.
It should look something like this.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1506.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/install%20fog/IMG_1507.jpg

I hope you like it and good luck.

Always nice when you get two posts for the price of one. :P

Naw, just kidding!

Sweet mod... right now, I have them wired so they come on independently, but this might be something to do soon.

this pretty cool man, thanks, i got my fogs wired up so i can turn them on any time i want, even if the parking lights are off, only problem is, if i turn them on, i risk leaving them on when i turn the car off cause there is no warning sound when you turn off the ignition. i think i might do this once it gets warn out around here. i always have the parking lights on anyways when my fogs are on.

Thats how I had it too, but this way was much better. What did you do?

If you wanna wire them so you can turn them on whenever, you just need to ground the black wire to that one screw... that's it.

If you do it this way then some people tend to forget to turn them off when you turn your car off.

If you want to be able to turn them on / off independently but not worry about running down your battery by leaving them on, you could use a relay.

Just a suggestion. I am using a relay to make it so I can turn the LEDs in my Oh Jesus handles on / off with a switch, but only when the key is on.

I did this last night, but i guess i messed something up somewhere cause mine don't cut off when i turn the lights off.

I can still turn them on and off whenever, I will look back over this sometime and try and figure out what I did wrong.

Yes you can do that, but instead of spliceing into the green wire on the harness find a wire that is always hot (on) so that you can turn them on when ever you want. The only thing is that if you leave them while your car is off your battery will die.

Make sure that you fallow the diagram or it wont work like your saying.

So i guess if i wanted to make my fog day time running lights i would just substitute a hot leed for the green wire out of the center wire harness?

Yup if you want to keep them on whenever you want Ill you have to do is splice into the black wire in the original harness and ground that wire. and it will come out whenever you want.

No, i mean if i wanted running lights that were only on when the car was on. I know i would forget to turn the lights off when i get out of the car an walk away from it.

Since I have a free Saturday morning, I just did this mod. If anything, it'll actually make me not drive around with my fogs on all the time, but it would be nice to turn them on just when I need. For example, at a drive-in, parking lights and DRLs are nice for not blinding people, but since the xB doesn't give me that, just having the fogs on would be good-- low, wide light!

Thanks, greenguyshrek!

Oh. you would need to find a power that turns on with the key. If anything there are some fuses in the car were you pop the hood. that you can splice into. I forget which one but that would be your best bet.
If you need anymore help let me know.

How can you do this with a JDM light up switch for JDM fogs? Right now i can do either this mod or the switch mod but i can't figure out how to combine the two.

Alright I got you man.

This is waht you should have since you have the JDM Foglight switch.
http://andy.lbox.org/cars/projects/foglamps/images/p9070009small.jpg

What you need to do is instead of using the ground for the switch (not for the light) use the new ground that gose to the relay. Its not really a ground it the wire that you use inplace of the stock ground.
Kind of like this ground

i did this today. Great mod and took me like 30 minutes and only because it was raining. what i did different was... i wired the wire that originally was supposed to go to the green wire for the illumination of the AC and ran it to the switched wire for the stereo. it was easy for me to find since i have an aftermarket stereo, and just needed to find the red wire. that way, they turn off when the car does and they turn back on when the car starts.

thanks again for the DIY!!!

The Green wire here in the original foglight plug?

Sorry for bringing up an old post.

I followed the steps except I ran the ignition wire to the cig lighter instead of the green wire from the middle plug.

So I tested the setup, turned the key on, left the headlights off and flipped the fog light switch. The fogs are working perfectly but now I have another problem, my headlights are on with or without the light switch turned on as long as the key is turned.

Any suggestions?

In the last picture you can see the only difference is the parking lights are off but the headlights stay on.

Now I'm going to go switch the wire from the cig lighter to the green wire in from the center plug. See what happens there.

Well I took another stab at it last night and figured out what I did wrong. When I cut the black wire that was going to the switch I reconnected it with the wire to the relay but also keep the other end from the factory wiring. So it seemed like I just added the wire to the relay without cutting it from the factory harness. So when I cut it, it worked fine. I did blow a few fuses but all is good.

I also decided to use the green wire from the center wire harness instead of the power to the cig lighter.

Thanks for checking though.

Yes the fog lights come pre-wired but what this dose is give you control of when the fog lights come on. And yes you are kind of bypassing the factory switch but you still use it to turn the fogs on and off.

GAxBox05
02-02-2010, 01:27 AM
The factory wiring only allows the fogs to come on when the headlights are on. This cheap and easy mod allows you to use the factory switch to have them on all the time like DRLs and other options.
