Dude I ripped that badboy out like 6 months ago. THis is what I did. I put in a drop in K&N Filter, took a flathead and pryed that darn white filter out the top of the airbox. When you remove it look on the inside of that filter. Its very restrictive, TRUST ME. Then take the resonator off the intake tube. Grab a cap off of a laundry detergent or apple juice bottle. You get the idea. Put the cap in place of the resonator and tighten the clamp. Hope that helps ya... Taking that out wont mess your car up, your freeing up more air. Its a positive.

well i am kind of doing that, i did remove the hc filter, put in a k&n, then rean a larger diameter pipe from the intake box inlet to allow more air into it, then wednesday i am having a hardpipe made out of 3" piping with all the fittings... Hello cold air box.....
Ill post pics when its all done!

The HC trap is part of the emissions system and will only be a concern for California and areas that have adopted their regulations for emissions. It traps fumes from unused fuel that may still be in the engine when the engine is off (I believe due to the fact that our engines have a returnless fuel system). It's one of the reasons that K&N's intake that reuses the stock airbox is the only intake for the tC that meets the requirements to have a CARB exemption.
