my car keeps shutting off.
ok well last week i installed my HKS exhaust and my Injen CAI, and yesterday driving out to HIN my driver side Fender Liner ripped off, so after it got ran over i couldn't put it back on, so i just drove without it. Well when i was cruising around 80mph on the 66 yeterday and put my car into neutral. my engine shut off. I realized it because it got really hard to steer my car. So i turned it back on and it turned on fine. now waht i notice is that if im going 60+ and put my car into neutral the RPM falls really low and sometimes it goes down low it enough to the point where the car shuts off. Now my CAI is on that side. Is there a possibility that its the CAI getting to much air, or what? has anyone else had this problem?
i've had mine dip low enough to stutter and almost cut off and mines completely stock...with your mods, it may just be enough to allow it to dip a lil past mine...idk what to tell you..i wouldnt be surprised by it, its going from like 3k to 500 in one motion....idk what to tell ya though...GL
nope, dont have the CEL.
the thing is if im just sitting there with the car on it idles around 700 to 800, and if i put my car into neutral at under 50mph then it doesnt drop as much but as you go faster and put it into neutral it drops more

check and make sure u have no areas where air is escaping between the throttle body and the MAF. i'm not sure why its shutting off on u like that without stuttering while IN gear but it sounds like a air problem related to the vacuum lines or air seeping out of the intake b4 the throttle body.
ie: if u take off the intake and start the car with the throttle body exposed it will immediately shut back off. oh and dont make a practice of doing that either.

oh yeah i'll mention that too. the fender lining probably has zero to do with it. i havent had a fender lining for the better part of a year. .
...no i take that back. i JUST got new ones put in cuz i had my bumper and such crack when i got ran off the road. Moral of the story....the fenderliner is unrelated. now there is the possibility it was a violent removal of the lining in which case it coulda hit the CAI and moved sum part of it free to where air is escaping near the throttle body but that is sooooooooooooooooooooo unlikely!

yea, what i did was take the CAI and turned it into a sri. so far no problem, espically because if i dont have the inner lining then my CAi is way more exposed, and its been raining alot, so i didnt want to have to deal with a bigger problem from the rain hydrolocking my car. I checked for leaks, and one thing we found was that one of the screws on the MAF sensors is missing, so that might of caused it to not sit right. anyways tommorow i'm going to my friends dads shop, he said he'll take a look hopefully he'll figure something out, and if we do find something that fixes the problem, ill be sure to post it, because it seems like im not the only one with this problem.
oh yea and btw, even if the TC is causing me these little problems, i still would of choose over an SI any day

oh yea and ACE83 its wierd but it holds the idle fine when im sitting still, its just going anywhere from 40mph or faster you start noticing that it idles lower and lower when you stick it into neutral to the point where it will just shut down
dude if the screws on the MAF are missing thats most definately the problem. that needs to be a good tight seal. if its not then the rocking of the motor alone will allow air to seep out. get sum screws. and make sure this time when u put it on that they are tight. however dont go so tight that u overstress that plastic and crack it or anything.
whats happening is the MAF is metering air intake that the motor is NOT seeing becuz its seeping out of the intake b4 it get into the throttlebody. but since that air WAS already metered by the MAF the ECU tells the motor "add enuf fuel to keep proper combustion for this amount of air". however since that air is not REALLY getting into the motor the xtra fuel is just drowning the whole thing and when theirs not enuf air for combustion safely the motor shuts itself off. ur gas mileage is prolly sucking a more than average if this happens alot to you.
