I will have a writeup soon, just thought I would post up the diagram so you guys know what to order for the cluster. Some area's of the cluster do not have leds from the factory, I highlighted the color that they would be from the factory so in case you have leds in that specific area, then, you know what color they are :) Let me know if you have any questions!
One cool aspect of the XD cluster, it has dedicated leds to light the needles! So you can make vivid needle colors like mine that look more like lasers in person. VERY cool!
The quickest cheapest way to do the swap is to use RED leds for the gauge face leds. This makes the orange tach area RED. Any other color will make the tach dim as toyota hosed us on the face color. No worries, I am working on affordable gauge faces for the xD & other scions.

Very cool garage! Thanks. I have an incidental question. When you had the multifunction apart did you notice if there is a straightforward way to modify the warning buzzer? What I'd like to do is put a trim pot on it so it isn't as loud. Another possibility: Could a person swap in a more melodious oscillator? (I don't want to kill it completely but, as a last hope, does that look doable?)

I never noticed a sound from the interior of mine, Guess I have not had it long enough *LOL* The engine bay one is annoying though.

I had read somewhere that the alarm for seat belts, door open, lights on etc is integrated into the multifunction gauge package. Since you have taken them apart I thought maybe you would know more. Are we talking about the same alarm? If so is it actually in the engine bay or somewhere else in the dash? (Not in the gauge as I read.)

05-06-2008, 06:18 AM
The beeping alarm with the keychain is in the dash someplace. Have to find that thing. Ticks me off haha.

When you leave your keys in the ignition, the beeper is built into the cluster.
Thanks for the diagram..will definitely be helpful down the road!

Looked over the board diag again, unless I am missing somthing, there is no buzzer on the gauge cluster circuit board. I think it is located in another location under dash. Will look into it further.

Excellent... seems easy enough to mod. Just a quick thought here, though... As far as the speedo/tach LEDs (the white ones) do you think there would be bleedover if you replaced the speedo ones with another color (say, blue) or left them white and put reds only under the tach side?
I would like to make my tach totally red, but I want to keep the speedo either white or blue... haven't decided what yet. I suppose you could just use foils as well... maybe red under the tach and blue under other stuff, while leaving the LEDs white. What do you think?

What a pain with that orange gauge... let me know when you have some new faces fab'd up and I might have to think about it!
Are you going to be able to mimic the black tint?
Garage1217
05-15-2008, 03:11 AM
The black tint is on the lense, it is not affected at all by the led swap :)
Runawayrogue
05-15-2008, 03:14 AM
No no, I meant on the gauge faces if we switch those with aftermarket. Is the tint on the gauge itself or another lens in front?

my turn signals are amber, and i'm getting some LED's for those soon.
still looking for a white LED door light. the overhead, and one in the back. bright enough to light up like the incandescent bulb does now. i don't want ANY bulbs in my car (except headlights). i already got the white LED back-up lights and license plate lights. i want LED turn signals and brake lights. soon, when i get $$$ LOL.

How does the Fuel gauge have 8 bars but only 4 leds ?
Do you have a board swap program where I could get a board and not have the wheels tied down for the duration of shipping?
Garage1217
12-04-2009, 07:34 PM
The leds to not light up per fuel level, they are always on. It is the LCD that either polarizes or does not which lets light through or blocks it.
Also I cannot offer a swap program on any gauge clusters for any modern cars as they store the vehicles actual mileage on the circuit board.

If I may ask:
What would the cost of LEDs for the fuel, odometer, clock and 3 HVAC knobs run.
I would like to do it myself, but need a link or directions to the HVAC changeing, and clock.
If it's not possible, that's O.K. too...
waiting for the cost est. :icon_juggle:
Garage1217
12-23-2009, 03:04 PM
Well the leds run .59 cents each for plcc-2, the clock leds are .69 cents each for plcc-4. The clock takes 3-4 from memory, been a long time since I did an XD. You can modify the #74 bulbs I carry to work with the hvac unit, those are $2.99ea and you need 3 of them.
Sorry for the delayed response, did not see your post!

bwhite - If you ship your cluster to Garage1217 you can still drive your car, it just won't read the extra mileage you put on it and you won't know your speed or fuel level, but if you are confident on maintaining the correct speed and keeping gas in the tank, then you shouldn't have a problem...Trust me, I took a tC completely apart and the guy went shopping while I did the swap, he drove around with no HVAC, window buttons, steering wheel controls, or gauge cluster...Also, if you wanna save a lil money on shipping, you could always take the cluster apart and send him just the Board and your gauge face and needles depending on the type of swap you want...
Garage1217 - Hey, I made a thread asking for a volunteer for the xD gauge face mod, but if you swap yours for aftermarket before then, let me have your gauge face, or you can do what we talked about, I have confidence that it would work...
Garage1217

That new twist style you got is awesome...I see you took the wedge and modified it with a twist base, very smart...Now does that fit for all the old clusters, or is there a specific size/style that they match?
Garage1217
01-23-2010, 04:55 PM
Well it fits most old style clusters that take a 168/194, T10, 2825, or W5W Twist Lock style bulb. The mr2 crowd has been snagging them up like candy! Cannot wait to find more clusters to test out with them. Wish I still had my 4runner, would be perfect for that bad boy!
And yeah, this bulb is not produced by anyone but me, I build them in house currently. Well until someone in china copies me *LOL*

So I'm about to begin doing a heavy sum of light mods and am pretty handy with a soldering device.
This is going to be a pretty demanding question, but I would greatly appreciate an answer to it.
I'm going to change all of the LEDs in these sections to lime green with white as the 2 tone in the dashboard. Where could I get ahold of these LEDs and what type would I need for:
-full dashboard
-mode button on the steering wheel
-automatic window buttons
-stereo (currently the 2009 system installed with changing screens)
-clock
Thanks in advance if you can answer this question.
