Default Fuel line question

I had a CEL throw the other week. Brought my tC in to find out what the code was. Turns out there was a leak in the fuel system somewhere. They gave me a loaner and sent me on my way. When I got it back they said it was a carbon filter canister or something. The next day the CEL was back on. So I brought her back in and it was a leak again but a different code. A small one this time. So they tinker around and find the problem. My fuel vapor hose was touching the piping of my CAI and had melted a hole in it. This is rather retarded IMO since I'd figure the hoses for the engine bay that have gasoline vapor would be a little more heat resistant than that. Anyways I got the hose for like $10 and they said they would charge me almost $60 to put it in. I laughed at them and told them I'd do it my damn self. So I swap the hose in, zip tie the sucker away from the intake piping and fire her up. She sounds fine but the CEL is still on and I want to reset it to make sure it's ok. I cannot for the life of me remember how to do that. That's the minor question. The major question though is there was a small green cap on top of a T joint where the hoses connected. Under the cap is what looks like a release valve. When I put the new hose in the cap was unscrewed and off. I don't know if it is supposed to be screwed on or left off with the hose repaired. I'm not sure if it was off because of the leak or if the workers just forgot to screw it back on. Is this something I need to worry about? (I can upload some photos later if needed, once I get back from work.)

reset the car by disconnecting the negative from the battery for 10 minutes. then reconnect, and it will be cleared.

or if you have $200 buy a scangauge, hook it up, and clear the code! it's that simple and expensive!

you can get them for wayyyy less than that. scanguageII can be had for like 140$ from i think 365 motorworks or somebody in the exclusive sales section. you should take a look, i got mine from them in no time. and i am pretty sure they can read and clear trouble codes.

I was looking to invest in a code reader but I don't plan to be spending more than $50 for it. I guess I could just disconnect the battery, but I thought there was a way to do it with like holding the odometer button, the glovebox button, the sunroof button, and starting the car up, while rubbing your stomach and patting your head, and doing the hokie pokie, or something. It's not really that much of a problem resetting the clock and stereo but it is annoying...

Anyone have any answers for the green cap question? Is this thing important to have off or on?
