I have been thinking about upgrading to Navigation from the regular stock radio. I just have a couple of question about the each. Can either be bypassed and still have all the functions of the steering wheel controls and Ipod hookup?

I beleive the stock navi can be bypassed........Chichum on here did it.........

the AVIC can be bypassed and workes great........you have to buy the PACI-PS for the steering wheel controls to work..........but it is easy to install.........

the avic has been discontinued at this point in the year for the new system form Pioneer so it is gettign harder to find........plus the new system has Bluetooth built in......

 

if I did get Avic would the Ipod hookup in the car work on the head unit or do I have to buy a specific adaptor?

You will have to buy the adapter for the Avic Z-3....I have the Z-2 (bypassed) and love it!!

I also have the bluetooth module and back-up camera. It comes with Hard Drive Navi (no disc needed) and it has 10GB of memory to burn Music to....I LOVE THIS THING!!

The only downside is speed (compared to D-3) and you can't change COLOR setting on the buttons...but you can upload your own background pics.
