Wheels for Straight Lines
i know nothing about nothing
it seems that everyone buys wheels and tires 1st for looks and 2nd for performance.
sooo, im wondering what are some good, small, lightweight wheels that are perfect for drag racing, but i could still drive around everyday.
they can be ugly, they can be wide too.
i love the look of super advans, but i dont know if getting some 16 or 17x8 inch advans is a good enough size for drag.
thanks in advance you SL no lifers

well, i was just reading a reply to a letter in car and driver about the effects of wheels and tires when it comes to a cars traction.
it was something about how wider tires do not automatically equal better traction, because while the shape of the contact patch of the car will change, the overall area of the contact patch will stay the same. but the change in dimensions will change your lateral traction or handling during hard cornering, but it really isn't that significant. basically, it doesn't matter how big the wheels and tires are, the suspension geometry and weight of the car stay the same and the area of the contact patch stays the same.
but apparently the way to get more overal rubber on the road are larger diameter wheels and tires wit a lower aspect ratio are the way to go for getting more rubber on the road, but don't quote me on that, it was a very difficult to understand what they were saying with the wording on the letter.
so sticker soft tires with lightweight wheels, changing sizes seems unnecessary.

Yes - smaller wheels with soft sidewalls (like slicks) are good because the soft sidewalls allow the rim to turn and whip the tire into motion. While the rim is turning and the tire isn't, energy is absorbed instead of instantly turning the tire, and breaking them loose causing a slip or burnout.
As for lightweight wheels, I would get Rotas. I'm not sure why everyone dogs them on here.. but they're fine for drag racing. I wouldn't use them for Auto-x, but if you want stylish, affordable, lightweight wheels, go with Rota.
Btw - shouldnt' this be in the wheel forum?
