Ok now I have my new xD, once I reach the 1,000 mile break in do I get an oil change or do I drive till the normal oil change mileage based on the driving conditions I drive?

No need for the 1000 mile oil change anymore. The tolerances on engines are so tight these days that the wear on the oil during the "break in" isn't as bad. Just stick to the 5k intervals and you'll be fine =]

GreyFox...if you change your own oil for the first time, take the plastic ends off the filter cartridge and bend the filter ribs "open" and take a look in between them. 'nuff said.

I change it every 3000 miles. You should wait til your 3rd oil change to switch to synthetic to allow the regular oil to build up helpful seals inside the engine. And metal shavings are still present in the motor, theres even a thread with some pictures of the metal bits found after the first oil change.
