So I have one of the very earliest 2006 tCs (got it in the first few weeks of the 2006 model year, so like July 9, 2006).

I started seeing an intermittent problem with my moonroof earlier in the summer, and it's pretty intermittent. I just want to see if anyone else has seen it in their tCs and whether you've been able to fix it.

So here's the problem. I have my moonroof open (fully or in that 3/4 open position, I don't think it matters), and I go to close it. It goes fine to the point where it automatically stops itself. From there, when I hit the button and hold it to close the moonroof, it might go about half an inch or a bit more, then it retreats back to...I think the mostly-closed auto-stop point.

If I try it a few times, sometimes it does close all the way. What guarantees that it'll work is if I reach out my window, up to the deflector, and press that down, and *then* use the button to close the moonroof.

I don't think it's simply a matter of something being in the way of the moonroof. It seems to happen mostly when it's hot outside or maybe it's just when the tC's moonroof has been heated enough. Maybe something expands enough to be a problem? Or could it use some lubrication?

Anyway, it's annoying, but when I mentioned it to the dealer service-person when I took it in for service last, of course I couldn't get the moonroof to show the behavior. The guy thought it was probably just something stuck in the way momentarily.

Soo....Has anyone else seen this in their moonroof? If so...did you manage to get it fixed? And if so, how?

I have the same problem, now when I close it, I let it close to the point where it auto stops, then let go of the button, and then click it again to close, after u get the timing right just after it auto stops, just keep hitting that damn button. But I wish I could find a fix

Lubrication within the seals...?

 

That's been happening to me for the last 1-2 years. When I had the car in for the side air bag recall, I told them about it and I think they lubed the tracks or something and it worked fine. Started up again months later (don't think weather had anything to do with it) and I haven't done anything yet. Doesn't look like there's anything in the tracks, so it might just need to be lubed up again.

My '06 just recently developed the same problem, but it was an easy fix. Opened it fully, cleaned all the tracks and parts I could get to for both the roof & deflector, then lubed everything. That was about a month ago, no prob since then.

 

yeah sometimes when it reaches that stopping point then u press it again to close it all the way and lower the wind deflecftor it just goes back open, just lube it a little, or just press it real fast a few times lol

 

Just pull the deflector down slightly when it reaches that point and it should go right over it, careful you dont close your wrist in it... it does hurt

i had this problem like twice already but good thing it was still under warranty so the dealership fixed it. first time i had it fixed all they did was take off the old lube and relubed it and it worked, but the 2nd time it wont even close unless i keep on pressing it like 50 times but that was because there was something wrong with my button.

i just usually hold down the deflector
until it completely closes.
it gets annoying after a while but
i really dont open my moon/sunroof
all the way. . . but i would like to fix it.
any lube will do i suppose?

 

Clean and lube where sunroof meets wind deflector. Sill glide works best but regular spray silicone will do the trick to. I have been a toyota tech for 21 years, this is a pretty regular problem but easy to fix. sunroof senses something is stuck and jam protection kicks in

I had this problem and I know the fix. Take a little silicone spray to the guides that put the deflector down every now and then. Pull the deflector down to get the roof closed then hold the switch towards the front of the car down for like 10 seconds, you will hear it make a noise and it will reinitialize the roof and fix your problem. It works great for me, now anytime I think I am having a problem with it I just hold the button for 10 seconds.

 

Search for various sunroof issues. It is a thread I created and will tell you how to fix that and various other issues with the roof. It just needs to be cleaned and lubed most likely.
