A company approached me and wanted to create Scion LED tail lamps.
I'm (personally) not too thrilled about the TYC design (top half is awesome, bottom is... yea).
I just wanted to see if there is any interest in getting this project serious. The price point is a little bit less than the TYC. I am leaning more toward a projector head lamp set w/ angel eyes =D But let's start slowly.
Also, these products are DOT approved =O This looks like a promising venture for us to engage in.
Here is a sample Civic corner lamp he left for me. The quality looks very good... I just can't find a Honda to plug it into LOL.
looks pretty nice, and stealthy. of course, the scion design would be structured completely different, i think it would look great if it was just as subtle and sleak as this one.
and projector headlights.... omg... would they be able to do that for us?

wheres the turn/reverse? I'd prefer those in multiple led or bulb. it looks like theres only one for that purpose if im looking at it correctly.
I would be down though, especially if it were to bring the companies interest towards aftermarket headlight options.

^^^ thats because the picture above is a corner parking light for a civic. the idea is to have a full SST/reverse assembly for the xD that would possibly look similar to that color and design scheme.

Yea, that's the civic corner lamp. A -sidemarker-ish piece is on the side of the lamp and the LED are amber.
Yea, I wanted to start with tail lamp options since they are already measuring them. They will send over a sample sketch of the LED pattern before going into production. It's our chance to actually help design it to our taste! LOL. If the first batch is successful, I will request they research doing a headlamp for us (projector w/ parking LEDs similar to the Audi R8... sound good?).
It's not the most functional part of the car we're getting some back up on, but it's a start. The R&D is minimal. THey basically buy the OE part and deconstruct it. Once that's done, they design the lighting pattern. I'll post pics of the Tundra installation once it's in.
The blacked out area is also available in different patterns... I'd personally go blackout (bsp here), but they said chrome (eww) and carbon fiber finishes will be available.

lol just realized that,
as far as R&D i hope they at least make sure there is good light output. I've bought angel eye projectors on my Corolla way back and it killed any light output because they used a small fog light bulb with the magnified projector lens and it was terrible. So basically it would cool if you could push them to design it to use the stock halogens at least.

i feel the same way about the TYC's; top is awesome and thats about it
ill be watching the thread to see what comes of this

and hopefully they will be cheaper than $300, lol. i wonder how they would look if the black part in the picture above could be color matched to the car.
I am so in for this, I to hope this turns out better then Toyota "TYC"
I love the TYC "LED's" Only. the botom half are very reminisent of the Blah feelings i got when I First saw the stuped idea of ok lets just put a cercle and split it in half.... Booo.....
I actualy was thinking it would have looked so much nicer if they would have made the stock likghts houseing black, and put LED's in the top Stop lamp portion, and in the smale amber blinker portion only. So Red LED's for the stop and Amber LED's for the blinker's just for leagle puruse with easy accusse to be able to change the amber LED's if so wished by thouse of us that mod. Oh and of coures a full clear lense like the TYC's No Red Lense like stock lights....
If they could keep any red reflecters out of the light them selfs it would be so nice to and just have them make a slick ad on to stick to the side fo the car. seeing as how we already have a red reflecter for the back portion. we would only have to ad a red reflecter to the side.
One more thing i wish the ight in the ambre blinker portion would extend into the extra crome area right next to the blinker. So reflect into it like the blikers on the side mirrors do.
Anyway i am rambling, that was my $0.02   (Fingers crossed)

It needs the reflectors to be DOT approved.

Sorry, my bad. The Tundra Tail Lamps are DOT approved. This is a older piece they made. All their new stuff has amber (front) and red (rear) reflectors.
Good news also... they do make projector headlamps.

Didn't get a price on the headlamp estimate yet.
Haven't received the tails yet either. They were shipping from overseas (he said Taiwan) and he's personally bringing it to me. Pics once they are in.

wow, so theyve already made a prototype of the taillights then?
are the projector headlights sounding like a project thats likely going to happen?

Sorry, may have confused the kits. They were sending a 07+ Tundra (completed) kit so I can check the quality and fitment. Once I'm good, we'll be moving into Scion territory. :P

Quality looks awesome on the Tundra set. We'll be doing test fitting/function pictures on Tuesday or Wednesday. This looks to be very promising.
The concept for the tail light.
"Angel Eye" type strands are there for the "park light" while the LED is strictly used for the brake/turn signal.
The price on the kit is also very promising. The Tundra is a 3-piece (left, right, and center lamps) and will retail for about $320. The xD 2pc will likely retail at an MSRP of $280. We'll see when it all comes to light though!
Pics... time for me to get a new P&S camera... My 5+ year old Sony isn't cutting it anymore lol
I know they are off the tundra but i dont know what it is about those set. I think there is too much going on with the inside's bezel and trim pieces. It seems to lack the clean & simple design that I would like imo.
Are they using your car as the guini(sp) pig?

They purchased a few tail lamps already (xB, xD) and will have something for me shortly. I told them that we should have the community help design the actual pattern inside the lense and that would help sales (duh, give the ppl what they want!).
My personal take on it:
I like the angel-eye idea for the "parking lights". The Tundra one is overkill (due to size, the thing is like 14" tall). I'd go for 3 rows of "angel eye" tubes and 4 rows of LED (the angel eye rows go between the led rows).
An LED turn signal that's a simple 2 or 3 rows.
Aside from that, I'd like to have it all black/gray. The chrome wouldn't be good on the xD, but looks decent on the Tundra... If you haven't noticed, I'm anti-chrome :)

I'm all for an open design were we could all have input. I have not been that impressed with the available tailights, so I would like to take a crack at it. A couple problems and questions come to mind.
The initial design had halos, which I thought were unique and do-able, but I've only heard them used for backup lights, which seems lame to me. How often would that happen... rarely, which is boring. I'd rather see them as the turn signals rapping around the corner of the car. I saw another pair on a BMW taillight that had 3 halo bars in the taillights, but they were overpowered by the brake lights bleeding through.... so the halo effect was lost. Unless you can black -out the background lighting, and isolate the halos's, light will just bleed into them. That's how they work around projectors. Doing otherwise is a waste.
Second, someone previously mentioned they were against chrome. But it's very hard to use LED's with only black, as chrome usually gives LEDs that dazzle effect. Without the chrome background, you lose a lot of lighting. Are we against all chrome, or just everywhere other than behind the bulbs?
Third, straight LED rows SUCK! Everyone's doing stupid box rows and they look like corn rows! If you're going to do rows, do them at slants or intervals or something other than boring straight lines! The square blocks of LED rows are starting to get on my nerve. Break it up with patterns or effects if possible.
Finally, I think the best looks tend to have a smoked look to them. I guess, the plastic is tinted. Dark, and kinda stealthy is always cool, but not so dark you cant see anything, cause otherwise, I'd just paint my own tailights black.
So far, the only LED taillights I've taken a second look at, were Altezza lights. So, if you see any cool picts, post them so we can see what's out there. We need some creative artists, or designers out there.
Thanks,
-T

So we installed the Tundra prototype lights yesterday.
The fitment wasn't 100%, but it was damn close! Just a small portion of that sticks out (the black part in the picture above that looks like a 'wing') didn't sit completely flush. Since the Scions don't have the 'wing', we'll be fine =P
I didn't get a chance to take pics (I was taking apart an xB2 for them...), but it looked nice lit up. The 'angel eye' parking lamp gave a nice even glow and the LED turn signal (amber) looked very aggressive. Overall, I'm impressed with this company. I just hope all the correct modifications are made for the production lamp.
Firesquare: Nothing at the moment for the xB1. I'll try and start something up in the near future. I want to complete my current projects before taking on more (xB2 tail lamp, xD tail lamp, tC Five Axis grille)

I'll get a few next week. We didn't get to put the third brake light in, so I didn't take pics (plus I was taking apart a xB for them to measure... amongst other things that morning). We have the lights on an employee vehicle.
In the light, it looks good. We'll have to see how it ends up looking in the dark.

Sorry!! Update: The guy ended up being really pushy and I didn't feel like dealing with him anymore...
I ask him to call before coming to see me... he just drops by randomly
I ask him to send prototype pics so we can post them online and have the actual consumers critique... he goes ahead with production (the tundra tail lamp, his first Toyota creation).
Then he suddenly wants me to "buy in" for xx units... of his only Toyota product atm... the Tundra tail lamp set. You know... because Tundras are selling well ;)
He's officially on the FAIL list. When his head come down from out of those clouds way up there, I may start with him again. New companies shouldn't be so pushy... I really wanted to help the guy out... but his attitude has much room for improvement.
