need help. strange noise, thinking it maybe my clutch.
at a dead stop when im shifting into 2nd and let off the clutch and push in the gas there is a rattle or screaching noise it also dose this from 2nd to 3rd. the car has 36k and is just over 3 years old, i don't beat on it all the time, and when i do, i do not overly use the clutch. and i don't slam my gears like a mad man.
any ideas?
thanks much.

If you are mechanically inclined, the throw-out bearing replacement is not hard. Unbolt the transmission, undo the clips and such for the t-bearing ( its the one over the center shaft ) and replace.
thats really about it.
at a shop it shouldnt cost much.

If it were a throw out bearing it should make the noise when you have the clutch pushed in? I agree with the belt tension or something else loose. I had a rattle on another car when shifting and it was a loose exhaust heat shield.
I agree with the belt tension. Ours was making a chirping/squeeking type sound right when the gas was pushed. Sound like yours? Anyway, ours is an auto, so I know ours wasn't clutch related. Dealer told me to order new belts. I did, had them installed and it was WORSE. Apparently, they didn't tighten them all the way .
Anyway, check the belts. The bottom alternator bolt is a total pain, but I would start there before getting new clutch parts.

i think im having the same problem. but as soon as i press the clutch it stops, i let it out it rattles sorta and the car idles rough. almost sounds like pebbles in a can shaking around.
I can ASSURE you the rattle your hearing is the throw-out bearing from the clutch. This has happened to many xA/B owners during the years. My was rattling as well for a LONG time, but since i was changing out my clutch i didn't make much of it, but as soon as the clutch, throw-out bearing and pressure plate were replaced the noise stopped.
Once again, there is ZERO DOUBT in my mind that your throw-out bearing has gone bad. But just in case im wrong, check the belts, if that doesn't end your problem change the throw-out bearing.
This is a repetitive problem that happens to 85% of all xA/xB owners, not a big deal, but dropping the transmission can be costly.
