View Full Version : My new armrest

So after looking around I decided to make my own armrest.
A buddy of mine and I made a fiberglass pan that fits snugly over the existing console cover, then foam and fabric. Had to cut off the original armrest but wasn't too broken up about it.

Thanks!
I went up a couple inches and forward as well so my wife who is 5'2" can use it with the seat pushed up. It's also big enough for both driver and passenger to use.

Scion should replace all existing armrests with this one, cuz what we have now is crap compared to this...

after i lost the stock one when i went to S2000 seats ive been wanting to do something like this... if you can make a couple i would be interested if you used suede to match my headliner and pillars...

I think I can make a few more. Maybe I'll do one and post a DIY. You need a really good sewer if you want to do it yourself though. And unless you make a plug, you can screw up your existing console lid.
After I did mine, I found some fake looking carbon material that matches the dash. I can do one of those as well as a suede one.
I'm really not trying to promote a new product but if there's enough interest, I could make some. I wanted to post this one because there's so much junk out there and the stocker is a joke.

The first "anything" always takes a ton of time that you don't re-coop.
It probably took a couple hours to make the fiberglass shell, then a couple more to stack and shape the foam, then a couple more to make the initial pattern, sew the cover and install it, plus material.
I'm working it out now and we can do just about any color, fabric, etc.
Let me figure out what I can front for the first 20 or so to get going. I figure we can make "bases" and cover them to customer specs or provided material.

Depending on cost, I would even be willing to front you money for one.

To keep costs low, I think you should just standardize on one spec so you can purchase materials in bulk just for that one spec.

9er
10-27-2008, 05:20 PM
I don't think it'll be too big of a deal to make some standards and leave some uncovered for custom guys.
I actually have a welding/fabrication shop (metal, fiberglass, etc.) and the upholstery shop is next door so we work together.
Since there's so much interest, I want this to be a complete kit so it's easy to install. He's checking some of the cost but we also have to come up with a solution to the hole left behind when you remove the stock armrest. Otherwise, you'd have to keep the stocker in the "up" position and make the new rest a little more narrow. Just so it still flips up to access the compartment.
Nothing is easy, but it's worth it!

Gotta do some "real" work but I'll get this going as soon as I can.

Was there anything fancy about removing the existing "armrest" attached to the driver's seat?

Thanks!

Very nice work. I too am very interested in this armrest.
I would buy one.
But I would also be interested in a diy. I can do the upholstery part, but I'm not clear on the fiberglass shell part of it.

I don't even care about the hole that's left in the seat after removing the oem armrest. I'm sure I can figure out how to cover it up somehow. :eyebrow:

some grinding would probably take care ot the post in the side of the seat from the old armrest! Or a hacksaw and file!!!!

THe arm rest is one of the things I miss about my silverado. The gas milage leaves it in the driveway. THe one on the door is a few inches low and the other could use your new and improved version. It would be great if you could figue out a way to make a pocket in the middle since storage is an issue. Im interested either way.

I want one if the price is reasonable in Black to match my black interior. How much and where do I send the money to?

To keep you cost and labor down low, you may only want to offer a few colors that match most xB's.

Thanks

I like my armrest, but wouldn't mind something like this for the passenger side. Especially since that plastic center consol gets scratched up so easily. I was planning on making an padded elastic fabric cover to go over the consul to hide the scratches, but this is pro.

I think the best solution would be a replacement armrest since it could just bolt right in place of the stock one using the factory hardware. A bit wider, higher, and deeper with a little storage and we could have a winner. I'm not a fabrication guy so I can't help out here. Just tossing out an idea.
