How do you turn ABS off?

It sucks alot

i used to drive a non ABS car that was heavier and had smaller brakes and I stopped quicker/shorter in it that with this.

I have ceramic brake pads too.

What I hate is that brakes last me only about 3-4 oil changes (about 3 months less than a year) before i need new ones.
I thought ceramic brakes lasted longer?

I hate the feeling of ... are my pads even touching the rotor??? is my car floating? when you slam the brakes before a turn. I'd rather hear my tires squeek a bit and know the car is doing what I want it to.

Your brakes last 15-20k miles? I think you got some problems some where. Is it a manual or automatic?

I like abs myself, nothing like stomping and steering around something vs manually pulsing the brakes in a panic situation and if I need to drift, just hit the parking brake.

there has to be something wrong with either your car or your driving.

check your brake fluid, your brake lines, have you replaced or turned your brake rotors? or tires or air pressure. etc. i've driven stock xa's they stop great.

lastly, ABS only kicks in when you slam on the brakes, you shouldn't notice it under normal driving, and it therefore shouldn't create any additional wear and tear on your brakes that is your fault. not the cars.

anyway, you don't want to disable ABS, i does what your supposed to do durring emergency manuever and pump the brakes so the wheels don't lock up and you can continue to maneuver the car.

if your brake pads are wearing out in 15-20k miles, thats your fault. not the car, and not the pads. you slam on your brakes, you wear them out faster, go figure.

and lastly, there is probably a fuse that can disable the ABS and cause the light to turn on on your dash. but doing so would be VERY VERY EPIC FAILINGLY STUPID!

I have to push my pedal pretty far down to slow down lately even at 25mph.

It is a manual and I engine brake often.

It could be that every week-end on my way back from my friends house I go down a mountain in Neutral for about 12 miles only using the brakes and they seem to get hot since I need to push harder and harder eventually. Then I drive 17 miles on very windy up and and down roads in which I have to use the brakes often.

I dunno, I heard that changing to ceramic from normal is bad if you do not change your rotors. So I will change my rotors and get new hawk pads.

My brake line inspection/fluid drain and refill (45k service) is due anyways so i will take it in soon.

But yea the mechanic at scion/toyota wrote on the check list that my brakes were already wearing pretty bad and I have only had them since summer (late june, early july).

My rotor is VERY shiny and has ALOT of (scratches) w/e you wanna call them.

First my sidewalls are weak, now my brakes suck, engine runs strong but "could" be knocking (maybe...)

any help or info would help

if your having trouble with your brakes, get a stop tech stage II brake kit or something similare. they come with slotted rotors, axxis ultimate pads, stainless steel brake lines and DOT4 brake fluid. also make sure that upon installed them, they are properly heat cycled or bedded in.

i'm still on my orginal pads and shoes and i have 45000 miles there getting all replaced next year idc what you say about the drums i'm still doing 'em

You said you have ceramic pads on now, did you replaced them yourself? Like Drax said, check your brake fluid, and brake lines; don't wait for your scheduled inspection because it's you that's driving not your mechanic.

You need to engine brake as much as possible going down hills, not ride your brakes. Read the signs for the trucks to use a lower gear. Let the engine brake you.

I never like the travel of the petal in my xa, but it did not take much effort.

Its against the law putting your car in nutral in VA and if your brakes do fail, whats left to stop you? The xa can be trickly to shift into a gear not alone if the engine is at idle and you are traveling 90mph.

You can do according tothe manual 77mph in 3rd gear. Next time you go down your 12 mile vertical drop, use 4th gear and tap the brakes to keep it within the posted speed, do not ride your brakes the whole way. Slow down withthe brakes, put the car in 4th or 3rd and then let off as the car goes down hill.

When on your trip winding around the mountain, you may want to use 4th vs 5th and just let off the gas and use the engine to break.

thx for the info, its just that i dont wanna ruin my tranny this way... i'd rather buy brake pads then transmissions lol

Read your drivers manual, you need to head to costco and pick out a coffin too while you are at it. If the brakes fail, the tranny aint stopping you.

engine braking doesn't hurt anything unless your over revving the engine.

I engine brake all the time in stick shift cars and from time to time too in automatics. When I went to wva and western va, I used 3rd gear a lot in my xb to maintain speed going down grades and not riding the brakes. Riding the brakes can cause them to over heat, boil your brake bluid and or cause total failure/fire.

I use 2nd in my tacoma and xb to stop hard with my brakes. Most steep in and declines will have signs posted encouraging you or trucks to use a lower gear. As long as the rpm is not in the red, you are fine.

My xa sounded like it had a jake brake with the strup muffler when engine braking. I bet it would rock in diesel for fuel economy. Not sure toy has any ultra low sulfer diesel designs.
