regardless u'll still need the speaker mounts because the drill holes are in different locations...

trust me, i'm cheap... i made my own speaker mounts which meant i had to spend money... that means theres no other way around it... u gotta get speaker mounts

stock size is 6.5" front and 5.25" rear. a lot of people have put 6.5" in the rear with no problems if they use a bracket (i've even seen an 8" woofer there). the reason you need the mounting brackets is more about the mounting depth than the mounting holes. the mounting depth on your new speakers is going to be considerably deeper than factory speakers. this means that if you were to install the speakers into the factory location, you have a greater chance of having clearance issues (magnet hitting door pannel or the window hitting the magnet when getting rolled down). to prevent this you should use a mounting bracket. elemental designs makes 'em, you can buy them off ebay, or you can make your own out of 3/4" MDF:

yeah the adapter is for the holes.. and for the clearence.. the 2nd time i replaced my speakers they put in a adapter.. yeah it ended up hittin the door panel and it made a crease onto the foam.. yeah cuz they ____ed up they upgraded my speakers. anyways.. back to the point.. make sure you have clearence.

On my '07 tC I had before, I had 6.5 Alpine Type R's in front and back - just using new brackets... 6.5 will fit in the rear no problem...

I put in 6.75" rear speakers with no problems (using wooden mounting rings from Elemental Designs).

i have type-r 6.5 as well. would they fit the front without hitting the cover at all? and i gather that the rears do need a bracket from what you guys are saying. where can i get a bracket?

Your question has already been answered in this thread. Here's a refresher.
