Ok so I bought some rims last week 18"x7.5 offset 42. I was planning on putting some 215/35 tires on them. So I was at the local dealership the other day and I saw in their showroom an xb with 18" with 215/40 tires. Does anyone out there have this size? Cause I was thinking with a little bit more meat it might be a softer ride.

thanks

you will get a little better ride. i had a 35 series tire and i plan to go with a 40 next time

so 40 series should fit right? Just wondering if there is going to be any rubbing issues?

I'm running 225/40/18 and it still fits :P

35's looks too skinny to me... 215/40/18 should be fine

right now im not lowered but I was planning on just lowering maybe 2 inches but not sure though cause I don't want to sacrifice the comfort. maybe 1" to 1.5?

no problemos

I ran the df210 springs thats like a 2.5 drop and the same tire size with no problems

the ride is nice. my offset is much lower than yours so i have a tiny bit of rubbing. +42 should be fine on a 7.5 wheel for 215/40s. IMO 215/35 is too thin. On my next set of tires, I might try 205/40/18s to avoid the rub and git some stretch.

the 215/35/18 will out handle the 205/40/18 due to the shorter tire which is close to OE overall diameter the 205/40 is taller

Ok so Im confused  I thought that I have read in other post that a 40 series tire and 18's are asking for rubbing. If this is not the case I got to get some 18"s :D

i am running 18 x 8" with 215/40/18"s ,lowered almost 2"s. only problem i have is that the tire rubes just a little on the lower inner raised part of the fender well in front.and thats only when i turn the wheel almost full radius. very minor issue. overall i'm happy with the ride. you can see the differance from my lava and my thunder cloud.

a 40 series 215 is about 1" in total diameter bigger than a 35 series 205

the rolling diameter of the 215/40-18 is 24.771"
the rolling diameter of the 205/35-18 is 23.649"

I covered the formulas for this last July at http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19301&highlight=rolling+diameter+formula if you need to review it shopping for tires.

I am rolling on Falken Ziex ZE-512 tires in size 215/40zr/18 (thanks to toast3r). The wheels are 18x7.5". It rides pretty good and fills in the gap slightly more than 215/35s. My ride is dropped on Tanabe DF-210s.

Won't 40s throw of your speedo. I have 215/35's on my xA, and was told by the tire guys not to go with the 40's cuz they will rub and throw off the spedo.

a 215 40 will set off the speedo by 2.3% too slow meaning when your speedo reads 60 you will be going 61.4.

I got it here

I have 215/40s and they don't rub at all even with my Tanabe DF210 drop.

I hear a lot of peeps with damaged rims running on 35's how come we don't hear to much people running on 215/40's. Is it just cause the size is rare?
Or they think they will rub?

I've got 18x7.5's with 215/35 and now wish I had gone to 40's as well - I'll change them eventually. Go to: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/brochure/info/tmpInfoTireMath.jsp
and you can calculate any differences in speedo, size, etc.. in a snap!

Cheers!
