rangerryda 09-23-2009, 07:13 PM OMG that's hilarious! Wait, crap, I've got the same one.... That looks like it was fun to handle to get off the road. What's the speed rating on those anyway?
WAlterEgo 09-23-2009, 07:18 PM if you got hurt, there coulda been some money your way :lalala:
...xb spares are black? mines got that special yellow coating on it which probobly prevents situations like this.:silly:
ack154 09-23-2009, 07:26 PM I can't see the pic from here... but don't the spares say to not go over like 45 or something?
Murphys_Law 09-23-2009, 07:39 PM yeah not over 45 or 50
burstaneurysm 09-23-2009, 08:55 PM Still... that speed warning is more due to the tire, not the wheel itself. That wheel should've held up.
i would of moved a rear tire to the front and put the spare on the rear so it doesn't ruin the transmission...
nodsetse 09-23-2009, 10:10 PM ^ I agree, wouldn't want to run any space-saver type spare on the front of any FWD car.

or rwd
but not sure about awd thou? unless it comes with a full size spare

awd typically come with full size spares
rangerryda 09-24-2009, 02:30 AM The only explanation I can come up with is the wheel got too hot from either low pressure in the spare or the heat from the flat tire before or that the lug nuts were improperly tightened (either too loose or too tight). Of course, you can't rule out what you can't see so there might have been flaws in the metal construction of the rim.
getaforknjob 09-24-2009, 02:33 AM Holy poo!!!
that purple thing looks like hub centering ring??? if thats the case that might of caused your spare to abandoned ship on you...
its just an idea...

Haha, definitely didn't notice that but yes I agree compeletely.
burstaneurysm 09-24-2009, 04:41 PM Yea, I bet it was that hub ring. The spare is already hubcentric, no need for a ring. The ring would've prevented it from fully seating properly. Regardless, it shouldn't have broken like that, but if it was just floating over the hub ring and you hit a pot hole, it's possible.
draxcaliber 09-24-2009, 04:47 PM glad you are okay. how bad was the damage to the box? no other accidents?
so your going to sue toyota?
i don't know, you were going too fast. not sure what the exact rating is, but it should be over 55 mph. then on a front wheel drive car, it should be switched to the rear wheel. and lastly, unless a toyota dealership or garage put that on, it could be that you didn't properly torque it down.
rangerryda 09-24-2009, 05:40 PM The torque and speed dont matter when you have a hub ring on there still. It won't seat properly and will wobble enough to heat the bastard up and it'll eventually break. "for temporary use only"
skinnayyy 09-26-2009, 01:37 PM yeah but if theres no directions on the spare, or in the manual saying to remove the ring before putting the spare on, and the ring is what caused it, then that could be pointed at toyota.
atoler 09-26-2009, 03:58 PM yeah but if theres no directions on the spare, or in the manual saying to remove the ring before putting the spare on, and the ring is what caused it, then that could be pointed at toyota.
The ring isn't on there from the factory. It is put on when you put aftermarket wheels on the vehicle. When the aftermarket wheel was took off to put on the spare the ring should have been removed also...
shupes31 09-26-2009, 11:29 PM yeah, that ring should definitely not have been on there.
GookStar 09-26-2009, 11:48 PM this is no ones fault but yours.. hub spacer ring is ment to stay on ur after market rim not an addition to ur spare... n spare yes 25-45mph max and the reason why this happen was cause you probley tighten the lug onto your hub as hard ___ possible n when u drove and took a turn or w.e it started to wobble alot lol i work at Discount tires.. seems worst.. plus throw away ur metal hub center rings n get the plastic one cause ur metal one will soon rust out n eyea.. not like anyone can see that ring anyways
GookStar 09-26-2009, 11:50 PM yeah but if theres no directions on the spare, or in the manual saying to remove the ring before putting the spare on, and the ring is what caused it, then that could be pointed at toyota.
wish you coudl say that but no you cant, cause YOU took it off, and YOU put on the spare so not ones fault but YOUR self lol
GookStar 09-26-2009, 11:52 PM i would of moved a rear tire to the front and put the spare on the rear so it doesn't ruin the transmission...
no it wouldnt matter its not an AWD
no it wouldnt matter its not an AWD
i already had my question answered anyways its all good cause i was asking a question when i posted an answer...
rangerryda 09-27-2009, 12:16 AM no it wouldnt matter its not an AWD
It still does matter because the differential is trying to constantly spin at vastly different speeds the whole time vs just cornering. This creates lots of heat and can wear out the differential and/or transmission prematurely. Besides, all your acceleration, braking, and turning is done on the front wheels... not good for a spare. Additionally, a rear blowout is much easier to control.
madscionce 09-28-2009, 11:41 PM wish you coudl say that but no you cant, cause YOU took it off, and YOU put on the spare so not ones fault but YOUR self lol
and I fixed it!
yellowxhoodie 10-24-2009, 06:38 PM yea, GL filing a lawsuit against toyota for something that was the end users fault.
burstaneurysm 10-24-2009, 10:41 PM Eh, I think this has run it's course.
