View Full Version : Clutch/Manual Shifter Squeaking
TRDxD 09-25-2009, 03:25 AM Just checking in; has anybody else had a problem with a squeaking clutch pedal and shifter? Clutch squeaks when depressed, it's slight, but its audible. Shifter squeaks when moving it from side to side, not into gear, but it's very loud. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm only 12,xxx miles into the car so it's a bit of a drag to be getting an issue like this.
Read through a thread on the tC forum and read some accounts of people going to the dealer, getting it replaced, and it just comes back no matter how many times its changed. One also quoted a tech (or someone working at the dealer) as saying you get what you pay for, Scions are pretty cheap (true) so it's nothing that can be helped
In all honesty I don't disagree, nor would it surprise me. Just want to know if I'm the only one having the problem, can't find any threads about it in the xD side.
JOEinSD 09-25-2009, 04:21 AM A quick search brought this up, along with some other threads regarding a similar issue...

Good luck.
TRDxD 09-25-2009, 04:49 AM loll.....okay so I was looking for feedback from the xD member's to see if they're having problems with it. I realized it's a problem with the tC when I searched, as you said, because nearly every post I found was relayed from the tC threads.
anywho...xD member's, got any similar problems?
Zefoxe 09-25-2009, 05:15 AM once again tC owners are in the xD forums to save the day... lol
but yea, I also have a squeak when pressing the clutch down. It tends to do it after driving back and forth tho or on a really cold start. I also get a clunk sound sometimes after releasing the clutch once in awhile
JOEinSD 09-25-2009, 05:34 AM I get a clunk sound when I shift into 1st. But only the first time from neutral. Or when I shift into reverse for the first time. It seems like the engine is moved... Quite a bit.
TRDxD 09-25-2009, 05:47 AM ah I've actually experienced the clunk when shifting out of first...as well as into reverse, but the reverse thing is normal...
Perhaps the cold start thing is what causes my issue for the clutch, I tend to try and forget about it while I'm driving, maybe I'll pay more attention to see if it comes and goes. The shifter however is constant, and really doesn't stop. Gonna pull up the console to see if there's a dust collection or something...we'll see? haha
Gmonroe80 09-25-2009, 06:07 AM My clutch started squeaking saturday when i press it in, only does it sometimes though, kinda weird.
WellesleyScion 09-25-2009, 03:02 PM I dont have the clutch pedal squeak, but I do have the shifter one. I had read a post a while back (before the forum change) about a member who was experiencing this and was able to fix it because one of the cables to the tranny had moved and was rubbing on the frame or body or something... Unfortunately I can no longer find the post to find the issue on mine...
TRDxD 09-25-2009, 05:31 PM actually that alone helps me alot. I'll make sure to check everything when i pull out the center, or was it the cables located from the engine bay through the firewall? At work now, but maybe I can get around to it tomorrow; I'll post anything related.
Thanks Wellesley!
mcbrew 09-28-2009, 05:03 PM I had read a post a while back (before the forum change) about a member who was experiencing this and was able to fix it because one of the cables to the tranny had moved and was rubbing on the frame or body or something...That was probably me. It turned out that they routed the cables wrong when they installed the TRD quick shift kit. This could be the case here, but there was also a service bulletin on motor mount failures that would also cause squeaking when clutching and shifting.
TRDxD 09-28-2009, 09:36 PM whoa I was not aware of this service bulletin. is it a free fix? im certain though that it's not a motor mount failure; there would be a lot more going wrong than just a squeaking clutch if that were the case.

TRDxD 09-29-2009, 03:06 AM seems that's for auto only?
mcbrew 09-29-2009, 02:26 PM It's a little confusing. It is listed under Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, which means autos AND manuals, or transmissions in general. You'll see further on that it lists as being an issue with the 5MT, which is 5 speed manual transaxle. The service bulletin is ONLY for cars with 5-speeds.
This pic from the second page of the TSB shows the part to be replaced, which is labeled as (1).

TRDxD 09-30-2009, 03:25 AM haha i should have known when i saw transaxle...oh well. pretty hefty part it seems. I guess ill get them to check it out? btw just saw your sig, congrats on the baby! (im the OP...i can go off topic if i want...MUAHAH)
ptperson 06-23-2012, 10:40 PM I know this thread is no VERY cold but I had this prob with my used '08 xD and it was just a matter of greasing the linkage that is located below the air intake. You can reach down there w/out taking anything off and move it by hand to confirm that this is the location. All in all, an easy fix.
