I put 0w 30 in my tc because the manual said " for max mpg and better cold weather starts use 0w30, but in all honesty, no difference at all in fuel economy, I can't even say 2mpgs better, to me it seemed to stay exactly the same

I have been using the German made group IV Castrol Syntec 0W-30 for the past 30,000 miles at every 10,000 miles. I recently took the box on a road trip from Los Angeles, CA to Newalla & McLoud, OK to visit some relatives. I averaged about 35 to 39 MPG at speeds of about 75 to 80 MPH. A lot of uphill, downhill, & long flat stretches of road on the I40. I was surprised at some of the 39 MPG tanks given that this box is not aerodynamic at all. I can imagine the xA on the same road trip. It can probably can get over 42 MPG.

Some are probably wondering how I got those numbers. I would fill up the tank & set odometer A to 0 miles & at the next stop, I would check the mileage on odometer A & divide it by the number of gallons that I put in & voila! I got the mileage. I even double checked the 39 MPG numbers to make sure that I didn't punch in a number wrong on the calculator. Mind you, I had 2 other people in the car with a bunch of luggage & weight in the car & going up & down mountains & valleys on the highway at 75 to 80 MPH. That's pretty good if you ask me.

But yeah. On average, the box gets about 32 MPG combined city & highway with that oil. We have a ton of stop & go traffic in Los Angeles too. I don't drive it like a maniac, though. I just cruise easy with it. That's probably the key here. No led foot. ( ^o^) <3

I switched oil in my triumph bonneville from 15-50 mobil 1 to 5-50 castrol syntec and the mpg went from 50-52 mpg. If they made a 0-50 at reasonable cost I would put that in. Pumping cold oil around does make a diffence on that bike and as it has carbs, the idle speed doesn't vary as much either.

I found changing the air filter out on the XB to be a really good idea. The OEM one seems to be really restrictive and despite O2 feedback, it still runs rich. The lad just drove 700 miles from CA averaging 27mpg. I swapped out the air filter and on the return trip he got 35mpg.

I gotta agree on that statement 100%. Wonder if an Ow40 after the 100,000 mile mark wouldn't be a bad plan. I hate going against the manufacturer but that don't care what's best in the out of warranty stage.

No, Toyota says 5W-20W for 2006 and newer, most engines including our '06 1NZ-FEs. Certain newer Toyota engines can run 0W-20W.
