View Full Version : For those of you who changed your springs....
TurboMe 02-11-2005, 07:49 AM Did u guys DIY? or had a shop do it? I saw this thread and I got a little scared that I have to apart the interior just to changed the springs. Im guessing they didn't use spring compressors?

jlaznlover 02-11-2005, 11:50 AM did it myself. taking the interior isn't that hard, only a few clips and bolts. the spring compressor is required for spring removal
ScionicXTC 02-11-2005, 05:24 PM The inerior isn't a big deal at all... and if you don't want to compress the springs yourself, you can always take 'em to a Midas or PepBoys and have them do that part :)
VIP_tC 02-11-2005, 06:19 PM did it with a buddy - only real difficult thing is you need a breaker bar and brute force to take off the lower bolts. Those bastards on there TIGHT!
TurboMe 02-11-2005, 06:54 PM can you just compress the springs and take them out? and compress the new springs and slide them in?
TurboMe 02-11-2005, 09:36 PM ttt
zoltiz 02-11-2005, 09:51 PM Nope, you have to take the rear struts out, which requires ripping out half the interior. Did it myself...
TurboMe 02-11-2005, 11:10 PM do you still have to compress the springs then? when u say half you only have to do it for the right side?
anyone got a DIY link?
VIP_tC 02-11-2005, 11:35 PM You have to remove the back half of the interior of the car. You have to compress each spring (4 of them) and recompress the new ones back on.
zoltiz 02-11-2005, 11:41 PM Not a very detailed DIY, but will give you a general impression:

P.S. check out the rest of the forum. Great community ;)

TurboMe 02-12-2005, 01:08 AM ah! sorry for all the newbie question hehe so when u rip apart the interior u take off the bolts right?
also does anyone know how much a local shop would charge?
Joe_Dezod 02-12-2005, 04:32 AM DIY baby!!! Only way to go. Have a buddy with you for the whole install though. Your life will be much easier.
LIKE_OR_AS_GOD 02-12-2005, 05:25 AM I just did mine tonight useing the walk through some one posted here with pics. There are a few things that need to be added to help out, but realy it wasn't that hard. Well other than those lower strut bolts where tight as hell.
SupaWhiteTc 02-12-2005, 02:23 PM I did mine without a spring compressor and it was cake work. It only took about 1 1/2 hours. The longest part was taking the damn rear interior out with the factory sub in it. Yeah as far as the bolts I used an impact wrench, it makes life easy.

next time use a maglight as a breaker bar for more torque to get those tight bolts =P

damn it! I plan on getting the factory sub too. Was it hard taking out the sub and putting it back?
kutsuju_dj 02-12-2005, 07:02 PM it took me about 5 hours just to do the back.... and 1 hour for the front... i did the back on base at the hobby shop and took the factories out with a spring compressor... but the freakin hobby shop was closing so i rode with my back lowered and front stock to my shop and put the front spring and shock assmebly in a vice and it worked just fine... actually easier then a freakin spring compressor.. but the back is defiantly a _____.... i did this a while back with sprint springs but ill be upgrading to tein SS so it will be alot easier this time....
SupaWhiteTc 02-14-2005, 12:24 AM Whhhhaaaatttt!!!! The back was the easiest one to do. It is not hard to take out the rear interior with the sub as much as it is time consuming. I didn't use any spring compression devices I just used brute strength, and had a friend thread the pillow mount nut on while I pushed down on it. Once we got the rear interior out it only took about 15 mins. to do the rear springs.
TurboMe 02-15-2005, 07:17 AM how can u take off the springs w/o compressing them?
TheKnown 02-15-2005, 07:33 AM I just used brute strength, and had a friend thread the pillow mount nut on while I pushed down on it. .
hes already answered this

i would not use brute force as you did. this is very dangerous to do. for example, if you did not push down on the spring hard enough, the strut mount bolt, the strut cap, bump stop, all that would fly towards you or your friend at a high rate of speed and would cause injury.
VIP_tC 02-15-2005, 04:51 PM how can u take off the springs w/o compressing them?
Possible - Yes
Safe - No
English 02-15-2005, 07:37 PM I've also heard about people twisting wire to compress springs, I wouldn't do that either
Xxgosumastaxx 02-15-2005, 11:46 PM Its so easy to compress the strut to take off the existing spring. All you have to do is lay the strut down and point the nut away from you. Get an extended (really Extended) ratchet and put a strong board ontop of the sprint. All i do is slowly unscrew the bolt, and the spring and nut go flying off in the opposite direction.
Did this many times on hondas toyotas ETC
vikvaughn 02-16-2005, 12:07 AM I had a shop do mine...
Balbo04 02-16-2005, 01:09 AM yeah me and my friends have done all our cars we only compressed the springs on the first car but the rest we just aim the other way and let it shoot off ...... but yeah its easy but if you never have i would jsut play it safe adn get a spring compressor its easy to use.... a guy we knew did it himslef ended up shoting the spring into his face and hes gonna need some surgery some of those suckers are really ready to blow ...... well no matter what just watch yourslef good luck....
nycazn79 02-16-2005, 04:27 AM You can get a simple compressor from ebay for like $15-$25
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4528220775&category=43998
or
a $75-$100 heavy-duty one like:

TurboMe 02-16-2005, 04:29 AM that doesn't sounds safe!
Balbo04 02-16-2005, 04:38 AM its only not safe if you dont play it safe.....always smart thing to do is compress it expecially if your just starting... people who have done it for years still compress its jsut smart to do a spring compressor is piece of cake.... im sure all of us would be willing to explain to you how to work one.... so im still all about doing it yourself trust me when you are done youll feel like a million bucks knowing you did it yoruslef..... and to be honest its not hard thing to do i think they charge you way over what they should at a shop.... also its pretty good to get your wheels realigned.....
jlaznlover 02-16-2005, 03:31 PM you can also rent one at autozone. they have rent a tool program. just leave a deposit for the tool, when you return the tool, they will refund your money. lots of tools to borrow(including the spring compressor). great program if you ask me.
unseen 03-09-2005, 11:41 AM we've got some geniuses in here. :P turbome, where you located?
SupaWhiteTc 03-11-2005, 04:00 PM I just put mine between the wall and a tool box and used an impact wrench to take the nut off and it goes bang and its released. No need for compressors, and to put them back on just push down and have a friend thread the nut on top.
vikvaughn 03-12-2005, 04:41 AM yeah me and my friends have done all our cars we only compressed the springs on the first car but the rest we just aim the other way and let it shoot off ...... but yeah its easy but if you never have i would jsut play it safe adn get a spring compressor its easy to use.... a guy we knew did it himslef ended up shoting the spring into his face and hes gonna need some surgery some of those suckers are really ready to blow ...... well no matter what just watch yourslef good luck....
Now that stuff doesn't sound safe at all..haha

NorCal :P

i used a 1/2inch drive socket wrench.... were a little tight but gottem off... :eyebrow:
compressor is needed and interior is no big deal at all... it's an easy installation job if you have the know how, but if you don't you'd be better off taken it somewhere... at least that way if anything goes wrong they'll fix it if what they did caused it...

Depending on what spring. I installed my S-techs using the same method. however i really doubt you could get hurt trying to push down on the spring, you cannot possible compress the spring that far down with brute force so the spring can fly back at you that fast.
Of corse when you take of the nut for the first time, aim away cuz that mother fer is hella compressed. ( Especially the rear struts
fam4lyf031785 03-28-2005, 03:55 PM hmm... half of the replys make me feel like "oh maybe i can do this" the other half its like "im gonna require some tools a friend and a paramedic" so what is the FINAL word on DIY TRD springs, cuz there just sitting in my trunk and are lonely.
