Default mysterious rattle/squeak in the steering column

tried searching, but didn't find anything...

i've been battling the squeaks and rattles lately, and just yesterday did the fix to get rid of the driver seat squeak. i still have a squeaky/rattle that sounds like it's coming from right behind the steering wheel. not 100% if it is actually coming from the instrument cluster or from the steering column. it sounds a lot like metal rattling (and no, it's not my keychain....) and happens during normal road driving.

car is an '08 bsp with manual trans, just clicked 30k, have new general altimax tires for last 4k, rest of car is stock. squeak has been around for a few thousand miles.

anyone have this happen to them, or have a fix?

thanks in advance!

ehh our cars always squeek non stop lol. try to mess with the tilt steering ( like drop it lower for a while and then back up cuz could be the wheel going against the gauge cluster)

yea.... the seat squeak was really ____ing me off. but otherwise, i have two 12s that help cover up the rest of them. just can't blare them all the time - like when my wife and son are in the car.

oh well.

for the driver seat squeak, it's a quick fix. there's a tsb on it which basically has you cut off some alignment tabs from the seat rails. you take out the driver's seat and flip it over. near the front of the two rails, there will be a metal post looking thingy (i know, real technical). you basically grind or cut them off. you can use a dremel or a hacksaw, but grabbed my 4" disc grinder and took them out. tool for the job: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95578

tsb is at the bottom of this thread: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/sho...ht=seat+squeak

total time was maybe ten minutes. squeak from the seat is totally gone.

it sounds like what i had in my 06 tc. sounded like a metal rattle from behind the speedo. turns out it as the metal lines going to the heater core or evaporator banging against the firewall. it is right above the accelerator pedal. there is a plastic clip on it. pry the clip off and get some felt from the dealership. cut into pieces that will fit inside the clip and stick it on there. that will space out the pipes enough so that it will not hit the firewall anymore.

so i got underneath the column and took a look - sure enough i see the two pipes above the gas pedal. i haven't removed the clip yet, but is the idea to stick felt around the pipes inside the hole in the firewall?

thanks!

no take the plastic clip off and line the inside part of the clip itself with the felt then replace the clip. that should space out the pipes enough to where they won't rub on the firewall or each other and there will be no more buzzing. yay!
