I use an all purpose cleaner from P21S:

All I do is cover my intake filter (SRI) with a plastic bag, spray the engine bay with a hose to remove loose dirt, spray this stuff on and let sit for a few minutes, and spray with the hose again. Works great but I have bad water so I end up with water spots if I don't dry it too.
Sounds pretty similar to the autopia guide andrewjc posted, they just use a different degreaser and do more brushing/protecting.

The way I've always done it is close to the autopia guide. I just use a citrus based foaming degreaser and the CD2 Engine detailer. I wouldn't want to use a pressure washer either.
I'm always tempted to spray mine down with a hose but luckily mine isn't too bad since i did my bnest to keep it clean from day one. to shine things up i use meguiars tire gel and that seems to last for a good amount of time under the hood
Cant recall the name, but I used this huge can from Autozone. It was a premium engine cleaner. Anyway you just sprayed it and let it sit for a few minutes then gently rinse off with a garden hose. My engine looks good w/bronze powder-coated intake. Too bad its covered up.
