Default Huge rattle underneath on cold startup-

Dealer just told me that there is a TSB on this, although I dont think I saw any post on this.

On cold start-ups my car would shake and loudly rattle. It would go away immediately. Something to do with a timing part.

Anyone experience this?

Mine seems to rattle for a second or two at start up (when cold) but i though it was due to the oil not getting onto the parts for a second during startup. Do you have the TSB number?

Not yet, I will tho- parts were ordered to the tune of some $300 (Timing assembly (or something).

Thing is ,they have to break open the motor. If you have this problem, get it fixed now, under warranty. I can see this being a $1000. repair down the road.

did you notice any shuddering during driving too? i had a problem that recently developed where, from a stop and going through first gear, my car revs to 2500 and starts to shudder like its about to stall, and falls to like 1k..so i have to floor it until about 3k revs for it to smooth out..

anyway im getting it checked out saturday so we'll see

TRDxD,

No, nothing like that. This "rattle noise" happens only for a brief moment when the car turns over during a cold start. I dont literally mean cold, I mean when the engine has been at rest for a long time. For me it happens every morning when I start the car, then goes away, right away.

But I could see trying to sell it one day and some buyer thinking "wth is that noise??", so gotta fix it.

I dont know if the problem is affecting performance, does not seem like it.

Mine does it from time to time as well. I just thought it was from lack of oil pressure when first cranking up. Keep us posted as to what the dealer says and the fix if necessary. Thanks

i work at a toyota dealership and i know exactly what this noise is. its the exhaust cam gear actuator for the vvti. there is an internal failure in it and it causes the engine to rattle like that on cold start up. starting to be a common problem with toyota/scion but its a fairly easy fix and there is a TSB available for the xd. if you are having a problem with this, just take it to the dealer and check to see if you are still in warranty, and if you are, they will take care of it.

I brought my car in to Toyota Vallejo because I have this rattle at startup from time to time. I don't drive the car much. The car has been in the shop for 3 days now. They started it up, heard the noise and so far claim that all scion xd makes that noise when the car has been sitting for a while. I even given them S-SB-0046-09 as Toyota acknowledge there is a noise in some 08 /09 xd's.

Dealership says they will check once again in the morning and most likely turn the car back to me unfixed stating the noise was "normal".

Even with a jeep that has been sitting 6 mths, it does not make this racket when first started.

they are just giving you the run around. that noise is not common to just xd's but its becoming a more common problem with engines equipped with vvti, which is all toyota cars now, but particularly with the 2ZR-FE and the 2GR-FE. they know exactly whats wrong with it, they just dont want to spend the warranty money on it when their isnt a tsb out for the '10 yet. trust me, i just fixed it on my '10 xd and i havent had a problem since.

Agreed not normal sound at all. Seems I will have to complain to Toyota as I do not expect this dealership will do the right thing and resolve the issue. My xd is 09..

First call from the dealer today - they were going to give my car back without fixing the issue. After talking to them for a few minutes I was waiting for the shuttle ride to dealership. They called back later and said had a look at the tsb number I provided and will be installing the fix. I am glad they are doing the right thing and will fix it. thanks Daguy

I don't have a sound clip of the noise but it occurs when the car has been sitting for a few days and all the oil has drained to the pan. Noise happens more with conventional oil than synthetic. It sounds like a very loud rattle in the engine bay. After a few seconds the oil gets into there and quiet things down to normal.

From the sheet looks like the fix consists of gear assy. camshaft, gasket. cylinder, gasket camshaft. gasket chain ten.

It's weird. I have heard from my car once and a while. Since I had bought the NST pulley, and installed it. I haven't heard the noise in since then. I don't know if the pulley did something because of the weight or maybe something in the installation process (snug down the pulley?). It may come back, but nothing for a while now.

Hey guys, I've started to get this exact problem in my car now.

Unfortunately I've just run over the 60,000 mile mark and don't think I will be able to get this fixed under warranty.

Is this something you think I should pay for and get fixed or is this just a minor issue that won't really have an effect on anything long term?

Also Nateson I'd love to know if you aren't having the problem, it looks like it's been a year and a half since you installed the pulley and I'm curious if it's a fix (I was going to get one of those anyways and would love it to be a fix )

VB, it is a serious problem and you should get it fixed as soon as possible, the longer you let it run with this condition, the better the chances of some serious engine damage...and trust me this is MUCH more expensive!

I'm around 60k without problem, and haven't noticed it anymore. I had actually forgotten about it. I don't know if we're experiencing the same problem though. Mine would do it every so often, and only on the initial spin up. Go see if they will cover it under that tsb, it never hurts to ask.

Hey guys! I know this is an xD thread but apparently its affecting EVERYONE! There is a TSB for the 1ar-fe and 2ar-fe engines including Camry, Venza, Sienna, RAV4 and Highlander. Here is the TSB info and the way to repair this..keep in mind THIS IS FROM TOYOTA!!
