Weird Engine Sound
So my mom's xB2 is making an odd sound atm. xB2 has around 76k on it, it's an '09.
My mom just told me about this today, so I do not know how long it has been happening and I only heard it on a warm engine start up.
When the engine is running there is an odd knocking sound, but not exactly a knocking sound. It is not loud, somewhat soft, but noticeable. At first I thought it might have been around the belt area because that is where I thought the sound was coming from. I thought maybe a bearing is going, but I can't really diagnose that since I don't know what that sounds like. Upon closer inspection, it sounds like it might be an internal noise, coming from the left side of the engine. I have no idea what this is and hope it is not bad.
Any thoughts? The folks are supposed to be taking it in since we have a 100k warranty.

I have heard quite a few water pumps making a knocking sound once they get bad enough. The reason they leak so bad on the 2.4 is the bearings go bad, and eventually start wallowing out so the pulley starts becoming eccentric.

Upon further inspection, the noise sounds more like a grinding sound. It happens every other second or so. Still from the left side of the engine. I cannot tell if it is internal or not but it is constant.

my 07 tc is making the same noise (i think). i just hit 53k miles and its been doing it for a while, i just figured it was a heat shield somewhere, but now its getting really intense. i had the car up in the air and i started it up and put my hand on the oil pan and i can kind of feel when the noise "hits". i change my oil every 5k with royal purple 5w20 and just changed the tranny fluid at 50 with royal purple 75w90. im going to drop my oil pan and check all my rod endcaps for torque but i think im going to check the water pump/ pulleys as well

Check the water pump!!!!!!!!! I had the same prob and today my car died on me. I pushed it into a parking spot and opened the hood to check it out. Saw one of the pulleys tilted to the side and as I reached down to touch it it completely fell off. It was the one attached to water pump and it completely sheared off the end of my pump. So the knocking noise I had been hearing was that it was cracked and vibrating and grinding till it finally came completely off.

got mine fixed! it was the water pump. the bearing went to $h!T and wallowed out the hole. i was leaking coolant and the noise was getting reaaaly bad. but got it fixed under warranty still and she runs like a brand new machine! so anyone with crazy noises i would advise checking pulling ur belt off and try to wiggle the pulley on the water pump. good luck!

Most likely the water pump. Its like a sorta hollow grinding, clicking, almost coffee pot like noise right? lol Mine would only occur during cold starts but after a year of dealing with it and then eventually seeing the "pink line" under my hood, I took it in and the pump was the culprit. It hasnt made the noise since I imagine the problem will come back 20k miles down the road.

yeah mine had been making the noise since around 20-25k but it never got worse until recently (53k)... had the pink line and you could just grab the pulley and wiggle it around pretty good. def. something to check out here

My xB2 was a used car, apparently my water pump was shot when they got it. So that was replaced and my engine still knocked. From what i pulled up on my report off my vin here at work one of the techs had to shave the guides a small bit because it sat so long. I dont have any noises now.
I do know that Toyota's redesigned the gaskets and the water pumps because this was a huge campaign throughout the engine line.
I bought mine with 19k on the clock so if you havent had your car at least inspected at the dealer, i would highly advise it.

I recently started having an issue when I start up my 2008. Almost sounds like a fan or a belt (no high pitched noise though). After a few minutes of driving it goes away.
My dealership did tell me that they were seeing stalagtites and such around the water pump seal. I feel like they tell me this every year around summer ( I live in AZ). But I am wondering if this is the problem I am hearing?
I just had the minor maintenance and the Basic transmission service performed.
If this sounds typical for the water pump going out....The dealership quoted me $572 to replace and remove replace the drive belt at the same time. Is this a reasonable quote?
