Default turbo question

its just been an idea ive had rolling around in my head. most all of my friends have had turbo manual transmission vehicles ranging anywhere from civics to silvias and early model supras. ive helped work on theirs to a small extent but for the most part im very new to the world of boost since ive never owned one myself. I own a an 05 xB1 and have plans to drop a younger motor in it due to high mileage. once i do that ive thought about a turbo kit just for kicks and giggles. however i have an automatic. can you slap an aftermarket turbo on an auto without having to swap the tranny? any advice would be awesome! might be a dumb question but like i said, im a boost newb

You can boost a auto no prob but if you plan on making alot of power your tranny will fail!!! I'm doing the same thing as you but in my Tc and doing a manual swap to plan on boosting few weeks after that

awesome yeah i dont really plan on doin it for power as much as the sound lol i will probably do a tranny swap regardless down the road so the turbo might just wait until then. i was more or less curious. but thanks for the info!

Turbo in an xB is a recipe for disaster. I have read a lot of nightmares about turbos on our small engines. They just cant handle all the excessive horsepower.

that was another thing that crossed my mind. i obviously wasnt going big turbo but i definitely dont want big problems. even if i run low psi you think i would have to do a full internal build?

I dont know enough about turbo so I cant say, I have just read a lot on these forums of problems that arise when you get it for us boxes.

gotcha yeah i can definitely see where a turbo could cause a lot of headache on such a small motor like ours. me and my friends have blown quite a few motors very easily...however we were pushin for power but regardless it was mostly small 4cyl. it might be more than what i want to deal with the more i think about it. thanks guys!

Things can always go wrong with having turbo cars, it all depends on the motor itself and the quality of parts in the turbo kit.

If you throw in a cheap eBay turbo kit, your motor might not last. If you get a name brand kit made for our car (greddy, turbinetics, etc) it will probably last.

If you throw a turbo on your box and all of a sudden think you are The Stig and drive like an asshat all over town, your motor won't last.

So the main deciding factor on the life of our motors and forced induction is the driver, keep the boost low (6- and don't pretend the box is a race car and you should be golden.

As stated just drive it normal and dont go nuts with the boost.A extra 40-60 hp should be plenty and fun to drive. The car it self feels pretty balanced just needs a little extra ummpphhh.

thats really all i was looking for. im not lookin to be the fastest box in town or anything. i love its ride just felt underpowered by a little bit. i might even reach that power by other means i just like the sound of a turbo. a good sound system is indeed in store for it as well lol
