I know what most of you who saw this are thinking, and no, I did not open my headlight housing of the brand new car, that I haven’t even made a payment on yet!
I got some LED strips and mounted them at the top of my headlight housing. I am using them as DRL’s, but I also installed a switch because the current LED strips are “good old Wally world specials,” and I do not trust them running 24/7. I went ahead with the install though, because now the wiring is all there for an upgrade later.
I am sure a lot of you on this website are old pros at jobs like this, but for me, this was a bit of a PITA, which is why I figured I would do a DIY and help some other rookies out. But please note:
I am in no way responsible if you shock yourself, or start an electrical fire, resulting in the loss of your vehicle while following this guide. I am not a professional; I figured this out by trial and error. I do not know the long term effects of using these products on your vehicle. Use at YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!
Supplies:
20-30 feet 16 gauge wire: $6 (you could use a lower gauge/bigger wire if you choose, but not needed)
Mini Add-a-Circuit plug: $7 found in the electrical section of most auto parts stores
16 gauge environmental splices 5-10: $5 for a pack of 10 (the kind you melt the outer plastic to seal the connection and keep water out
Wire strippers & Crimpers: $10 for a cheap pair, but that will be fine for this
Switch $6 this is completely optional and prices vary, I got a switch that lights up : ) that’s why it was $6
Female splice connectors: $4 pack of 10 (optional, only needed if you install a switch)
Post terminals: $4 pack of 10
8-12 inch LED flexible light strips: $18 at W.M. but you can use any as long as they are waterproof

Before we begin I would like to explain why I used the interior fuse box. MightyP who is also a Scionlife member is very knowledgeable and had already searched all over the engine bay looking for a place to tap power from that was only getting current when the ignition was on. He found the MAF sensor, but that was about it. Call me crazy, but I haven’t even made a payment yet, the last thing I wanted to do was be cutting any wires on my new car. All of the fuses under the hood are constantly hot (always have power) so if I did it there, I would need a switch to turn them off, which meant running wires to the cab anyway, so why not start there?
First remove the cabin fuse box cover, located under, and right of the steering wheel in the cab. I used the WASHER FF fuse space which has a 10 Amp fuse. If this is the fuse you want to use, then go ahead and pull it out. There is a fuse puller in the car, in the main fuse box under the hood. This only has power when the ignition is on. PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11259

Now, on your add-a-circuit, there are 2 holes to add fuses. The weird stock fuse will not work in the add-a-circuit so you will need to use the 10 amp that comes in the box in the first hole, closest to the metal arms of the add-a-circuit. PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11256

Then put in the 3 amp fuse that comes in the add-a-circuit box into the 2nd hole, the hole in line with the wire. Put this to the side for now. PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11257
Next, cut a 15-20 inch piece of wire from the spool of 16 gauge wire. Strip both ends ¼ of an inch. Add a Female splice connector to one end, and a Post terminal to the other. This wire will be our ground for our switch. PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11261

Hook the post terminal end to the bolt labeled E (for earth ground) that is located in the drivers’ left side kick panel. This panel is easily removed by popping out the driver’s door skip plate, and then the kick panel will come out with gentle persuasion. PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11260
Next slide the Female splice connector side to your switch, the post labeled ground. Lay this down on the floor and pop your hood, time to put in the lights.
The LED’s I used were 12 inches, and you can cut them. 12 inches is a little long, so I cut off the last 3 on each strip. Clean the top of the headlight housing so that the 3M tape holds good. Center the lights the best you can and mark if you need too. I eye ball’ed it. PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11264
Use the existing wire that you haven’t cut off yet on the strips, (EDIT: My lights were very cheap, and had cheap 20 gauge wires. I cut that all off except about 6 inches at each light.) and add a splice to each wire. Read your LED packaging so that you know which wire is + and which it ground. Ensure you cut enough of the 16 gauge wire to run the Positive + to the cabin. I ran mine down the driver’s side, under the hood channel. This wire I ran to the driver’s side light, then ran the passenger side positive wire to the drivers, and spliced them together, that way I didn’t have 2 separate wires running to the cabin. You can hide the wire from the passenger side under the radiator cover. PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11263
I ran the ground wires to a good ground bolt labeled E next to the battery. (Used 2 ground wires because I goofed and had already hooked up the drivers side) PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11262
Once you get this situated, go back to the driver’s seat. Connect a female splice connector to the positive wire that you ran from the lights, then slide that onto your switch labeled to accessory, or power out, however your switch is labeled.
Now, take your add-a-circuit and crimp a 15-20 inch piece of 16 gauge wire to it, then on the other end of the wire, add a female splice connector. Slide the connector onto your switch labeled DC in/power in. Plug the add-a-circuit into the empty fuse hole (the one you removed) with the wire coming out the side facing AWAY from you, toward the engine bay/firewall. (This is important because if you do it the other way, the 3amp fuse is now hooked to your washer fluid spray motor, and it will blow the first time you use it!) PIC
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=11258
Turn your car on and flip the switch to test! Now go back and figure out where you will mount your switch and you are done. I used a dremal tool and about 45 minutes of time to reuse one of the factory dead switches for my switch to mount. PIC

This is the way I did it. Im sure there are other/better/worse ways of wiring these in. This is to help guide to get you headed in the right direction. If anyone has any better ideas, PLEASE share! Thanks!

Killer DIY! Thanks for doing all the hard work of figuring out his to do it. And I definitely agree your way of getting power is the wiser choice

how/where do u route the wires through the firewall?

Druidiron
07-05-2011, 04:13 PM
I dident go throught the fire wall. I routed the wire on the drivers side door, under the seal. The seal holds it well enough that it doesent move. I was actually hoping someone would come up with a good spot to go through the firewall, as the way I have it is a little ghetto

MightyP

Firewall is a PITA to get through on the drive side. Just not much room to work with. Passenger side has a lot more room in the engine bay to work with if you're okay going the long way around.

I still dont understand where u could have routed the wire, through the top or bottom? I guess ill have to go look.

When I redo my DRLs, I'm planning on going through the firewall, into the cabin. I'll take pictures of how I do it. Right now, the plan is to run a separate wire from the cabin to the engine bay, then splice the LEDs to the wire.

Great job bro!!! I actually just tapped into the corner lights wires. Good thing about LED it uses very little power. You just use '3M quick connects' (no cutting or splicing) for the connections. LED positive goes to corner lights positive and LED negative goes to corner lights negative. The LED strips will be on when you turn on parking/corners lights and stays on when headlights are on.

Here is where I went through the firewall. It was easier than I thought it would be and only took about 10 min to shove the right length of wire through and put the rubber grommet back in place.

The pictures show the wire in the open so you can see where I went through the firewall. I will hide the wire when I get the new LEDs in from Oznium.

Do what MightyP has done. I saw that spot, but couldent get my wire to go through. I will be doing this exact thing this weekend though.

Yet anouther idea stolen from MightyP!

Hmmm i already did it. they look nice. I did the door thing, but i can always go back and reroute it. I'll look tomorrow and see where that spot mightyp is talking about. is it easy to get to? do i need to take off anything? or can i just shove that peice over thats covering the hole?

MightyP
07-06-2011, 05:23 AM
I didn't actually go through the rubber stopper, I went next to it. And, no, it's not hard to get to. My short butt was able to push the wire through, next to the rubber grommet without moving anything. Just push the grommet out of the hole a little, then push a bit of wire through. Go to the cabin and PULL! :)

MightyP awesome work.... Is that red wire your pull wire? Would this also be a good place to run an amp kit wire?

nolakpd504
07-06-2011, 09:18 PM
The only thing i dont like about that idea is because of the wire reaching across the engine like that. Looks unclean. I guess i can get some plastic wire cover and run it along the side and down to that hole.

Yeah, or paint it dark so the wire isent so odvious. Im switching my routing this weekend to match MightyP's. Right now it is hidden well under the hood catch track on the drivers side....that is untill you open my drivers side door....then BAMB! Bright red wire all in you face......

It's a really good place to go through the firewall! So good, in fact, it's where Toyota used. :) And don't look at how I have the wire routed. It is like that just for the pictures. I will be rerouting the wire when I get back in town. It will look clean when it's done.

Well i don't know how u did it, but that rubber piece is SO hard to move. I can get the wire stuck in where the rubber wraps around the outside, but it's gotta go through all the way. Also, from inside the car it's even harder.

It's like a two man job lol

No no, don't do that. I've found a way! Just take a screwdriver or some tool and push the rubber peice from the inside and there will be an opening. Make sure the opening can stay open for a while as you route the wire from the outside through it(or route it from the inside, whatever you want). Then just close it back up. Wala! No cutting :)

None taken DtrTc2. Like I said at the end of the DIY, I know there were other/better/worse ways of doing this. I just explained the route I went for people who dont want to tap/splice/cut into thier cars' wires.
The 3M connectors are great, but if I had ever removed them, there would forever be little cuts in my wire sheilding that I would have to tape over or heat shrink, and I dident want to do anything that couldent be removed 100%.

as far as the firewall goes, i used a pair of long needle nose pliers, insert it in the passenger side grommet then open the pliers up. use a wire hanger or extra piece of wire and pass it through, once you get everything wired and ready to go, tape the H#$L out if it to the hanger or spare wire and pull it through from the engine bay. i did this for my gauge install and it saved me a lot of time.

i also found a bunch of "side emmiting" LED strips on-line that are designed for this kind of application, pictures of them looked pretty good

just to chime in, I'm a TC1 owner. I prefer the in-headlight look, much more OEM and cleaner looking, not to mention more exposure to the SMD leds (Yeaaa I used egay $10 LED strips). And then...less exposure to elements (I live in Wisconsin, so go figure when winter comes! :P ) hehe

Worked out great that half my car was being shaded by a tree and half wasent. So the first pic is the side that was in the sun. The strips are much more noticable with direct sunlight:
http://www.scionlife.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=3074&pictureid=12158

The strip is still visable on the shaded side, but pretty much only if you are looking for it. Before I knew what these LED strips looked like, I would have never noticed:

What he ment is, you can't see the strip its self when it is off, placed at the top like you can when it is at the bottom. It looks more factory there because it is not obvious that it was added. Your right, no car has them at the top from the factory. However if you want one of these strips to look as factory as possible, you pretty much have to put it at the top.

Regardless, I can't read your post any which way, were it doesent sound like you were being an a$$.......lol

No offense taken, just following Scion's original tagline "United by Individuality" . So you make the call. To be honest, I get mad compliments and looks my way with the strips mounted in-headlight in brow area vs my bro's Mazda3 mounted top like most others do who don't want to completely part out the headlight lenses.

mine is pretty well hidden but you can see it if you're looking for it. i would of loved to put mine inside the housing but ive seen to many horror stories on people messing that up so ill stick with this for now. i dont want to know how much a new headlight assembly is.

it might be hard...but maybe pre-wire the strip and fish it into the housing through the hole for the high beams?

u would need something (a robotic tweezer? haha) to be able to help guide it

that was my plan a long, long time ago...just never knew how to get it to work...

Druidiron

You could drill a hole on each side in the rear, and fish the strip through that way, then just seal the holes really well. Would be a pain, but it would take some of the risk out of baking the headlight housing.

To be honest, for those who have never baked headlights, I've baked 05-07 halogen ones and 08-10 projector ones, the later years had better black (vs grey old school) sealant material, easier to work with and less amount. I'm sure this material carried over to TC2 headlights.

Baking is probably the easiest way to ensure you can pop the headlight all in one try (or two if you use lower heat cuz you want to be cautious). I wouldn't recommend cleaning them prior to baking, if you do, wait for a complete dry and remove all cleaning chemicals.

My experience, 250 degrees at 10-12 minute does it just fine. You want additional sealant? Go buy butyl-type material (ex: 3M Ribbon / Window seal). NO SILICONE.

Threading any LED strips into housing sounds really difficult if not impractical. You'd still need additional adhesive to hold the strips in place otherwise they could go start gettin loose in direct sunlight under operation ;) (cheap strips most likely don't have heatsinks to remove the heat generated by LEDs). Most will come with some double-sided adhesive but my experience tells me... that doesn't hold well on plastic material.

Here are pictures of my lights with them turned off. Having the lights under the headlamp doesn't look as stock as having them on top of the housing when they're off, but having done it both ways, I still prefer under the headlamp. Main reason is because when they're on, they look much better than on top of the housing. During the day, the headlamp shades the lights just enough that the lights are still bright, even when the car is in direct sunlight. Also, and this is a personal preference thing, my LED strips are 18" long rather than the 12" you can fit above the headlamp and I think it makes them look much cleaner.

Anyway, here are the pictures as requested. Notice these are more noticeable in the shade than in the sun and I will say, the pictures don't do them justice. They appear far more noticeable in the pictures than they really are. I've had a number of tC1 owners say how much they like that the tC2 comes with the LED DRLs (assuming it was factory) and more than 1 car aficionado compliment me on how clean the strips look.

I currently have mine on top.. the only reason is... the strips I purchased was so low quality that every time I attempt to install it at the bottom, it ends up the strips not functioning properly with sections of LEDs not lighting up... whats left is just long enough to be placed at the top... I got mine from a local auto parts store and they work fine. I also didn't remove the bumper when I installed the lights. I put the strips adhesive to adhesive and then just wedged the double-stack between the bumper and headlight.

LEDs are secure (just went through Tropical Storm Lee) and work like a champ.

Where did you order your strips from?

whitetc06: Oznium.com

They are really cool about warranty. Didn't even question me at all and sent replacements right away... too bad even the replacements are low quality..

just to clarify.. these are the waterproof side emitting LED strips...

I've ordered other regular LED strips from them. None have the problem. Its the side emitting LED strips that are pretty FUBAR...

Edit: i retract what I said.. LOL

how did u get enough room the wedge in between?! it seems like it could very well damage the strips...

Very carefully. In all fairness, I installed one set of strips, no problem, pulled them out cuz I decided to run the wires different and damaged them coming out. But I haven't had any issues with shorting the LEDs going in. With the strips stacked like they are, the small gap between the lamp and bumper is perfect. They are very snug, but I've had them installed for a while now and no issues. Also, I did have to go single strip the last 3" because it's too tight.

I was afraid you were going to say oznium, for the most part their LEDs are good but the flex LEDs are below good quality. People are having a lot of problems with them. I'm trying to find a good flex led other than oznium and am thinking about autozone.

That's quite the job you did double-stacking them. I've always been afraid of the silicon breaking... :(

Yea, I realize that after I ordered them. They are the only place that I found that sells the "Cool White" LED strips... all other places claim to be "Cool White", but all end up being just "Natural White"... I'm addicted to that blue tint... hahah

Thanks for the reference. I've actually already tried the LED strips from SuperbrightLEDs.com... their "cool white" is actually just "Natural White". I bought them, installed it, and dang... different color...:eek:

Worse case, I probably just strip my current strips and go with the white that can be easily obtained... lifes a biatch aint it? LOL :rolling:

To be honest, they are all going to be similar in design; my brother runs his LED strips (from Autozone) on top of his Mazda3 headlights, a few have burned out already...and they aren't as bright as ebay ones.

I took a quick look at oznium's ... they're exactly the same as ebay ones! LOL and ebay ones are far cheaper in price also. Again "in-house" brand names make no difference, designs are 99% the same.

Example: http://bit.ly/pBgNhM

Also if you want SMD Leds (side mounted emitting) ... sizes matter, I run 5050 SMD size. Ebay $11, 1 month now, let's hope they run through winter.

These are mine (100% exact design and function):

To the person who keeps taking off his/her bumper, did it ever occur to you that you have a battery under the hood and you can test both leads right off the battery before mounting?? lol

No. You misunderstood... I tested the strips prior to install. even whip it around like jump rope.. it was all good. Until I rip off the adhesive cover... somehow that motion loosens the soldiering points and screws up the strip... its just poorly soldiered together... since if u press it, the LEDs light up again....

And theres no way i'm putting those type of LED strips you linked up on ebay.. they are fugly! LOL! :rolling:

The 1st link, it's the same pic as I saw on oznium.

The 2nd link, you can either pay for that, or use...

http://bit.ly/pD46GF from autozone and pay $18.99+. Those LEDs look a lot smaller than the 5050 SMD ones ebay sells. Like I said, google up SMD sizes and you will find what you want. Believe me or not.

Thanks for your help...

This is actually the type I'm looking for... http://www.oznium.com/side-emitting-led-strip

Edit: This type of strip, the LED actually faces side ways... not your typical strips where it faces upward.

So far, all the ones I've found are only "Neutral White" despite many sites claim being "cool white".

For a better color reference: (left to right, Cool, Neutral, Warm)

i put mine along the inside corner closer to the top grill but the wire got destroyed when i was messing around in the engine bay so for now it looks kind of strange ( had to cut and re-solder the strip so its 3 leds shorter then before) then along the remainder i added amber smd side emitting leds for turn signal looks really good ill upload pics when i get a chance or a vid, had to pull of the bumper to get it all hidden nicely then just tapped into the corner parking lights and the turn signals heat shrank everything and no issues with rain had it on for 2 1/2 weeks now

that corner hook is what causing most of the strip failures... unless you get good quality strips... most strips can't handle that kind of bend.. and you have to pick the bend point too.. can't be on the section cut line nor can it be on the tiny controller chip line... it was painful... I still have to fix mine...

I didnt spend any since I got these from a friend who sells this stuff... but this link here is as close as it gets... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Audi-style-20-side-glow-SMD-LED-Light-strip-White-Fog-/180727805192?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a14377508

As far as color goes.... I can tell that some LEDs are more blue tinted than others on the same strip... but the overall strip is closer to a 7000k temp (between natural white & cool white) from far away...

Got a quick question, I just got my lights (AutoZone ones) but the gauge of the wire looks really small like 22 gauge. I know the gauge of the corner lights is really small too and I was thinking of using t taps. Will the 22 gauge be ok? I've seen some people using 16 gauge.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/180621020011?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

I went ahead and removed the bumper and cleaned the head lights with paint prep to make sure they would adhere properly. I was going to use a switch to turn them on and off but my friend convinced me to find an + wire that came on when the car was started. so we traced down a wire in the fuse box and spliced and soldered in to that. We had some split loom laying around and ran the wires for the lights in that (sorry i didnt take pics) over all very easy install and i love how it came out! here are some pics

as far as the firewall goes, i used a pair of long needle nose pliers, insert it in the passenger side grommet then open the pliers up. use a wire hanger or extra piece of wire and pass it through, once you get everything wired and ready to go, tape the H#$L out if it to the hanger or spare wire and pull it through from the engine bay. i did this for my gauge install and it saved me a lot of time.

i also found a bunch of "side emmiting" LED strips on-line that are designed for this kind of application, pictures of them looked pretty good

Much better than going next to the grommet ... which is there to prevent wires from chaffing and shorting ... which is why you dont go next to it ;)

yea i remember someone in this thread doing it but its very tedious to get it to work. its easier just to yank the bumper and install them, dont be afraid it was really easy. I didnt even have the car for a week yet i found my self one night standing in front of my new car and the bumper was off and sitting on the lawn so i could add the LED lights.

damn ok. I was just wondering cuz i live in an apartment and dont really have access to a garage of tools. plus the car is leased so accidentally messing something up removing the bumper would be costly as hell. i dont know its still up in the air whether to put them up top or bottom... I got some time to decide until they get here in a few days. if i could do it on the bottom without removing the bumper it would be my best bet but who knows, im so indecisive.lol

I didn't remove the bumper...

It was really easy without removing it. I just put double stick tape on then tucked it where the gap is.

where did you run the wires and did you run them into the parking lights or did you run a whole other switch?

Haha there are a few other ppl that didn't remove the bumper.

Anyways. I basically followed Druidiron's DIY exactly as he said.

The only difference I did was prepping my led lights.

I got waterproof strips double the length. The strips came in a plastic housing. I removed half of the housing and folded the exposed led strip and pushed it back inside the remaining...I doubled the strips to make it brighter (thanks MightyP, his idea). From there i put double stick tape, wedged it in the gap, and had the wires facing the center of the car. The wires then go up the slanted vertical gap and then soldered it to some thicker gauge wires and followed the rest of the DIY instructions

cool i appreciate it. if you fit 2 in there without taking off the bumper i should have no problem with just one... maybe i should just order another set and do what you did, i didnt even notice that there was two on each side untill you said something, was the one on each side not bright enough for you?

yea that is funny they look exactly the same. the worst part about waiting around for a replacement is that their business is 25 min away from me and i cant just show and and exchange them... they have to be mailed out. lets see how long this takes now :tap:

I doubt that we will ever see the LED daytime running lights on the TC, they cant even give me a light in my glove box there is no way that they will put them in the headlights. plus its an increase in cost and if the price start climbing too high they will lose their target market.

u mean the 2013?

i told u...2011 = 1 reverse light
2012 = 2 reverse lights
2013 = 3 lights (2 reverse + 1 led drl set)

Doesn't Audi have a more curvy style look to their LED's?

This would be Lexus style! (see CT, GS, etc..)

and KidJustin is right! the 3rd light in next years model is the LED Drl's lol

basically they should be called Audi lights because Audi did it first (or at least made it popular first)

Lexus just barely started this trend with their FSport ISs

Ah, I'm a little late in adding my photos.

My install of my lights is just a very thin black LED strip set on the headlight. It's not underneath the headlight, and it's not really noticeable unless you walk up on it and stare at it. Oh and the lights are just connected to a separate switch to turn them on and off when I want.

Here are my photo's:

Installed on 9/15/11:

I can't remember the brand name, but the color is cool white.

As for size, are you referring to the LED or the actual strip?

NP!

Where did you get them from?

I guess by size I meant the actual strip. The LED's are much larger than most. Your strip only has 14 LED's on it, most are over 20. IMO it looks way better with a larger LED

Thanks!

My friends own a shop, and they purchased a roll of the LED strips. I'm probably gonna stop by their shop tomorrow for a visit, so I'll ask for you while I'm there.

If I recall, we measured ~14"

Just thinking, couldn't you just tap into the factory parking lights and run on that? Then throw a nice white LED in the parking light spot.

adding the fuse is for safety.

so in case something happens with the led and the wires short....the fuse pops and everything stays safe.
