Default L.S. Differential + clutch installation labor cost?

My mechanic, not feeling perfectly comfortable installing my LSD & clutch himself (I think he's being overly/ultra conservative here), got a quote from a place he usually trusts: $2000 to install the LSD and clutch. He trusts this place, and I respect my mechanic's judgment, but it nevertheless seems very steep to him and myself. The principle of the thing offends me, when I've seen much lower figures floating around the Internet, more in the range of $1000+/- a little. I even saw a dealership quote around $1400.

I called Descendant/World Racing today and they quoted me $900-$1000. I can't realistically take it there, however, as I live two states away.

Help/guidance/thoughts/direction, would be appreciated.

Thank you!

-John

Why don't you just take it to one of those places close to you that quoted you less? Seems like a pretty easy solution

i would take it to descendant, and you can break in the clutch on your drive back.

As I state in my original post, I live two states away from Descendant. I'm not driving to Descendant's location in California. What I'm looking for is ideas as to what you think it should cost. I'm not making any decisions until I get as thorough a sampling as possible as to what a typical charge would be for LSD + clutch installation.

I'd say something in the $1000 range is more reasonable. The cost of the clutch isn't that much, but installing it takes a bit of work (since you have to pull the engine.) This is what ptuning charges for clutch installation (parts included.)

BTW, where did you find the LSD?

I'd say $900 - $1000 is pretty realistic as well.

I bought my OS Giken LSD from PTuning. Very happy with those guys. Too bad they're on the other side of the continent from me.

You should not have to pull the engine to change the clutch. Transmission yes, engine no. The internet is great but most of the information out there is garbage. Depending on where you live I'd say $1000-$2000 is typical. Have you looked at any of the diy threads on here for the install? I'm not saying you should try it but it will give you an idea of what the other guy is going to be up against.

I would drive two states away if it saved me $1,000 or more dollars. IMO if it's a serious mod I would definitely drive a ways to get it done by the shop that probably has the most experience modifying a tC...especially if that place was 1,000 bucks cheaper than the local mechanics. However, I don't know you're circumstances....but $2,000 is pretty steep. Personally though, I would study for a while and give it a go myself.

Yep sounds right, if the labor charge is about $100/hr., which is what many dealerships charge. I've checked with 3 Toyota/Scion dealerships, and received the same quote:

10 hours for the LSD install separately.
9 hours for the clutch install separately.

14 hours if performed together since the tranny only has to come out once.
