So my wife is driving out 09 xB and suddenly the VSC and SEL comes on. Car had a few instance where she said she stepped on the gas and it felt like it wouldnt go. I am researching here and I see the wire harness thread. I also see the coil boot thread. I have the recall sheet but havent had that done yet. She is at work so havent gotten the code checked yet. She did put gas in last night and its possible its the cap. But I am trying to prepare for the worst. Was the Engine harness issue only on the 08?

Any insight people can give me is much appreciated.

So went to Advance. Got codes P0793 and P2714.

Was there ever a fix for this? I've got the same codes popping up for me.

Car starts fine now, but shifts from 2nd to 3rd are very hesitant. I've replaced the VSS's with these ( ) but the codes still pop up after clearing and taking it out for a drive.

Desperately need a solution, my local toyota/scion wants another 130 bucks for diagnostics after fixing my no start issue (bad ground).

I heard the rear speed sensor wiring harness can corrode. If you look at them there is nothing really there to stop water getting in the backshell (where the wires enter the back of the connector).
Try a free fix by pulling the connectors apart and soaking them in WD40.
If that works, it might be worth putting some bathroom tile caulk into the back of the connectors

RichBinAZ, would it be possible for you to show me where this is located?

I'm about to drop it off at the shop tomorrow, so please let me know. i can spray it out and clear the codes and try again.

I must have been thinking of the Mk1 XB, but here is a pic of the Mk2 left rear axle.

I think the sensor connection is that block just to the right of the small spring on the handbrake mechanism - just left of the shock

Well, it's the ECM from what the dealer came back with. 850 for a new ECM, 300 labor...Can't I buy a used one and swap it??

Yes, but you need to make sure it's from the correct year and transmission as there are program changes. It might also need to be programmed to the car at the dealership, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

While i've got these soaking, can anyone also point me to the actual ecm location? I've been watching some videos on other ECM issues (speciafically with rav4s and camrys) and they appear to be failing due to cold solder joints on the board.

I'd like to take the board out and check it over since i'm handy with this kind of stuff but have no clue where it's located.

It's in the engine bay between the fuse box and the air box. Large metal object. I've attached a picture so you can see it.
