Default 2nd gear woes. Warranty Issue?

Help please.

At higher RPM's my box won't shift into 2nd without some serious elbow grease. A lot of times it will grind when I don't slam it in gear.
It was like this a little bit when I first got it, I've been gentle with it for a while but now it's getting bad.

Any others out there with similar problems?

Some insight please so I can have some ammo when I go to the dealership.

Thanks,
Justin

Your car is under warranty, take it to the dealer and have them fix it.

Sorry, I should have said when I go to the dealership this Saturday.
I'm just looking for others who may have some insight into what the problem is. That way, I won't have to waste my time.

I'm looking for whether anyone knows if it's the gear box, cluch, trans, shifter linkage or whatever.
Also, if this is something that might end up as a recall, we could all benefit from advanced warning.
I've already gotten one PM from someone who has the same problem. Anyone else?

sounds like a bad synchronizer...try double clutching and see what happens...

I'll try that, thanks. So if that works, you think it's a bad synch?

They better have a loaner car ready for me. I haven't reserved one yet, and you know how that can be.

I am inclined to say that if you can shift smoothly after double clutching a synch has went out...if it doesn't perhaps the shifter is out of adjustment...

Yeah. . . at higher RPMs, as you said, it's a pain. It's been a problem for me since new, and I think a lot of us have had the same problem. I think it's just the tranny.

Do you mean that it won't shift, or that it's just VERY VERY slow?

Same problem here, every time I shift into second gear from first no matter how far the clutch is pushed it will grind. I'm taking the car in tomm. and it better be covered under warranty! I knew from the day I first drove an xB that the clutch and tranny were going to have issues but didn't think it would be at 8,700 miles!!

I forgot to follow up this thread. I brought the car in and took a tech for a drive and he said he will have to look at it. After an hour or so they told me they needed to replace second gear and clutch. I brought it in when they had the parts and they ended up replacing the whole tranny and clutch under warranty. Thanks Toyota!! Since the new tranny, I haven't had any problems with grinding like I did with the first tranny.

I've had the same problem on 2 different occasions. It's the syncros. If it is under warranty, then it will be replaced without hastle. I got a rental car while they fixed it too. The first time they fixed it they just replaced the syncros. The second time they did it, they replaced the tranny altogether. I haven't had a problem with it since. Just take it in. If they hastle you, tell them that you want to speak with a manager. If the manager hastles you, tell them that you're going to corporate. It shouldn't be a problem though. This is a common issue with this transmission.
